Columbus Crew look to make MLS history on Wednesday night
October 5, 2004 - Major League Soccer (MLS) News Release
The Columbus Crew will look to make Major League Soccer history on Wednesday night as they attempt to set the longest unbeaten streak in MLS history against the Chicago Fire at Soldier Field. A win or tie by the Crew would extend their unbeaten streak to an MLS record 16 games, a mark that would surpass the all-time record set by the Los Angeles Galaxy over two seasons (1997-1998). Columbus current 15-game unbeaten streak (7-0-8) has already set a new all-time single season mark with the former high of 12 games reached by four different teams most recently in 2001.
Columbus will also have an opportunity to secure the coveted No. 1 seed in the Eastern Conference for the MLS Cup Playoffs with a victory, guaranteeing home field advantage in a Conference Championship. The defending Eastern Conference champion Fire are still three points clear on their hold for an MLS Cup Playoff spot and with a positive result against the Crew, could secure a playoff spot if the New England Revolution fail to knock off D.C. United at home on the weekend.
