Omaha Storm Chasers News Release

OMAHA – The Kansas City Royals have extended their Player Development Contract with the Omaha Royals through the 2006 season. By the time the agreement ends, Omaha will have been the Triple-A affiliate for Kansas City for 38 years.

Only two Triple-A clubs have had as long of a working relationship with their parent club. The Norfolk Tides match OmahaÂ’s mark, being affiliated with the New York Mets since 1969. The Richmond Braves are the only Triple-A team to have been paired with its parent club longer, having been affiliated with Atlanta since 1966.

Over the past 36 seasons, Omaha fans have had the chance to watch many players on their way to stardom with Kansas City. Some of the more successful players to pass through Omaha include: George Brett (1973-74), Frank White (1973), Willie Wilson (1977), Mike Sweeney (1996-97), Paul Splitorff (1969-71), Steve Busby (1972), Dennis Leonard (1974-75) and Dan Quisenberry (1979), as well as up-and-coming players like Angel Berroa (2002), Ken Harvey (2002) and Zack Greinke (2004).

Manager Jack McKeon, who took the Florida Marlins to a World Series title last season, managed Omaha from 1969-72. He guided the O-Royals to American Association Championships in 1969 and 1970. Omaha also won that league title in 1978 and 1990.

The Royals drew 318,537 fans to their home games in 2004, raising the teamÂ’s 36-year attendance total to 9,605,254.

“The news of the extension of our Player Development Contract with Kansas City is good news,” said Omaha Royals Senior Vice President/General Manager Doug Stewart. “We view this affiliation as a good match for both sides,” Stewart added.
