Attendance

The Sea Dogs welcome the 4 Millionth Fan to Hadlock Field on April 30, 2004.
The Sea Dogs establish a new franchise attendance record, hosting 434,684 fans, surpassing the previous mark of 429,763 set in 1995.
Portland will finish 3rd in the 12 team Eastern League in attendance and 5th among 30 Double-A teams in total attendance (behind Round Rock, Frisco, Akron and Reading). Out of the 176 minor league teams in affiliated baseball, the Sea Dogs will finish 26th in total attendance, Portland finished in 30th place last season, 31st in 2002, and 32nd in 2001.


In the Majors

Sea Dogs pitcher Abe Alvarez is called up to Boston for a spot start on July 22 against Baltimore.
Sea Dogs closer Joe Nelson appeared in 3 games for the Red Sox.
Andy Dominique, Anastacio Martinez, & Kevin Youkilis from the 2003 Sea Dogs make their Major League debut for the Red Sox.
On July 25, Sea Dogs third baseman John Hattig is traded to Toronto for Major League relief pitcher Terry Adams.
Pitcher Bryan Hebson is assigned to Double-A Portland, Hebson appeared in two games for the Expos in 2003.
George Lombard plays 16 games for Portland, Lombard previously spent time in the Majors with the Braves, Tigers, and Devil Rays.
Pitchers Lenny DiNardo and Phil Seibel pitch for Portland after appearing in games for the Red Sox earlier in the season. DiNardo’s Sea Dogs appearance in on a Major League Rehab assignment.
Pedro Astacio makes start for the Sea Dogs in August. Astacio has won 118 games in 12 years in the Major Leagues. He was signed to a minor league contact by the Red Sox. He received a September call-up to the Red Sox.
Former Sea Dogs Chris Aguila (Marlins), Jorge De La Rosa (Brewers), Matt Erickson (Brewers), Adrian Gonzalez (Rangers), Ryan Snare (Rangers), & Matt Treanor (Marlins) make their Major League debuts.
109 Sea Dogs players have now appeared in the Major Leagues.
Former Sea Dogs currently with the Boston Red Sox are Pedro Astacio, Lynn Jones (first base coach), Gabe Kapler, Kevin Millar, Euclides Rojas (bullpen coach), & Kevin Youkilis


Other Notable Happenings

Brett Roneberg had an 18 game hit streak from 4/27-5/14. It is the longest hitting streak by a Sea Dog since Mike Gulan hit in 20 straight games in 1998.
On May 14, 2004 the Boston Red Sox announce a four year Player Development Contract extension with the Portland Sea Dogs.
The Sea Dogs send four representatives to the Eastern League All-Star Game in Bowie, MD. (Abe Alvarez, Jeff Bailey, Kenny Perez, and Brett Roneberg).
Juan Perez is selected to the Major League Baseball Futures Game in Houston, TX.
Red Sox # 1 prospect Hanley Ramirez is promoted to Double-A Portland on August 2. He came as advertised hitting .310 with 5 home runs, 15 RBI, and 12 stolen bases in 32 games with the Sea Dogs.
On August 3 Sea Dogs utility player Raul Nieves becomes the first Sea Dogs position player to pitch in a game since Pookie Wilson in 1997.
Brett Roneberg represents his country Australia in the Olympics and returns with a Silver Medal.
“Hit the Mitt” The inflatable mitt in right field was struck by Sea Dogs home runs twice in 2004. It is the first time it has happened more than once in a season and just the third and fourth time in history. Mike Lockwood struck the mitt on 8/10, he split a $5,600 jackpot with Youth Alternatives. Mike Lopez-Cao hit the mitt on 8/25 and split a $1,000 jackpot with Youth Alternatives. Jaime Jones (1998) and Luke Wilcox (2001) are the only other Sea Dogs to have hit the mitt.
On August 26, 2004 the Eastern League announces that the 2005 Eastern League All-Star Game will be held in Portland.
Abe Alvarez becomes the youngest Sea Dogs pitcher to win 10 games in a season.
Brett Roneberg becomes the 6th player in team history to collect 30 doubles and 15 home runs in a season.
Six Sea Dogs are invited to participate in the Arizona Fall League (Stefan Bailie, Alberto Concepcion, Sheldon Fulse, Kason Gabbard, Jerome Gamble, & Kenny Perez). Sea Dogs trainer Lee Slagle is also named the trainer for the Peoria Saquaros.
