BURN AT UNITED SATURDAY ON ESPN2 AT 3:00 P.M. (CT)

The Dallas Burn travels to the nation’s capital to face DC United on Saturday, September 11 at 3:00 p.m. (CT) in a match that will be televised nationally on ESPN2. With just six matches remaining in the regular season for the Burn (9-10-5, 32 points), the team is currently in fifth place in the West, just two points out of the fourth and final playoff position. United (6-9-9, 27 points) currently occupies the fourth and final playoff spot in the East.

BURN/UNITED SERIES NOTES

The Burn leads the all-time series vs. United, 13-8-2…both meetings this year have been at the Cotton Bowl, with the teams playing to a 1-1 draw on June 26 and the Burn taking a 5-1 victory on July 24…the Burn has lost just once in the last ten matches vs. United, posting a 7-1-2 record over that span…Dallas is just 3-5-1 in matches at RFK Stadium, but has posted a 1-0-1 record in the last two matches there…Burn forward Jason Kreis has enjoyed the most success against DC, scoring 11 goals and adding four assists for 26 points in 23 career matches.

O’BRIEN CONTINUES HOT STREAK

With an assist on the Burn’s lone goal Saturday, midfielder Ronnie O’Brien now has one goal and three assists in his last two matches. O’Brien was named MLS Player of the Week after striking for one goal and two assists (including the game-winner) on August 28 vs. Chicago. He currently ranks first in the league in assists with 10 and is tied for first with four game-winning assists. The Burn has never had a player finish the season first in the league in assists. Jason Kreis’ 15 assists in 1999 was tied for third in the league.

GIBBS PLAYS FULL 90 WITH UNITED STATES, JOHNSON BACK IN CAMP

Burn defender Cory Gibbs played the full 90 minutes in the United States’ 2-0 victory over El Salvador Saturday in a World Cup qualifier. Gibbs now has 12 caps with the National Team. Forward Eddie Johnson was called in to the National Team camp prior to Saturday’s match but returned to Dallas in time for the Burn’s match at Colorado. He was initially scheduled to rejoin the team in preparation for Wednesday’s match in Panama but has instead stayed with the Burn.

FINAL SIX MATCHES TO DETERMINE BURN’S PLAYOFF FATE

With only six matches remaining in the regular season, the Burn currently finds themselves on the outside of the playoff window looking in. Despite their current fifth place standing, the Burn is just two points back of fourth-place San Jose, three back of Los Angeles, four behind Colorado and six back of conference-leading Kansas City. Of the six matches remaining for the Burn, three are against teams ahead of them in the standings. Dallas will face Los Angeles twice in a home-and-home matchup and closes the regular season at home vs. San Jose. Of the six remaining matches, four are against teams with a .500 record or better.

RHINE OUT SATURDAY, THREE OTHERS ON VERGE OF SUSPENSION

After receiving a yellow card in Saturday’s match vs. Colorado, forward Bobby Rhine has surpassed the 21-point caution plateau and will serve a one-match suspension when the team travels to DC on Saturday. Three Burn defenders are one caution shy of serving one-match suspensions as well. Chris Gbandi is just one caution point shy of reaching the additional 11-point plateau, Steve Jolley is three points shy of reaching 21 points and Clarence Goodson is one caution point shy of accumulating 11 points in three matches.
