Boston Cannons News Release
(Boston, MA â July 14, 2004) The Boston Cannons (6-1) of Major League Lacrosse (MLL) play the Rochester Rattlers (4-3) this Saturday July 17 at Bishop Kearney Field, Rochester, NY at 7:30PM. This is the second and final time the Cannons and Rattlers will meet in the 2004 season. Boston got the better of Rochester in the first contest with a 21-19 win over the Rattlers at Nickerson Field on June 5. The Cannons have won two straight overall against the Rattlers dating back to last season. Both the Cannons and Rattlers are in first place in the American and National divisions respectively.
"This will be a major test for us," said Scott Hiller, Cannons head coach. "Rochester is playing very well right now. They have solidified their goaltending situation with Tillman Johnson. They are playing strong on the defensive side of the ball as well as on offense with Ryan and Casey (Powell). We need a full four quarters of effort on Saturday."
The Cannons improved to 6 and 1 overall with a 20-18 win over the Philadelphia Barrage this past Saturday July 10 at Boston University's Nickerson Field. The win moved Boston to 4 and 1 in 2004 at Nickerson Field. It was the first meeting of the year between the Cannons and Barrage. It was the Cannons fourth straight win against the Barrage.
Michael Watson was named the game's Bud Light MVP. He scored five total goals, including what proved to be the eventual game winner midway through the fourth quarter. For his efforts Watson was named the MLL Offensive Player of the Week. It is the first time in Watson's career that he as been given an MLL Weekly Award. It is also a first for him to be named the game's Bud Light MVP.
"It is a great honor to win this award," said Watson. "I was able to get my shots off this past game and made the most of them. It's great to win this award, and it is made even better by the fact we won the game and improved to 6 and 1."
Three out of the Cannons next five games are away from Nickerson Field. The Cannons are 2 and 0 so far on the road in 2004. The Cannons are 2 and 1 all-time playing at Rochester. While playing on the road may pose a slight disadvantage for Boston, three of the Cannons next five games will be against teams with sub .500 records (New Jersey (1) and Philadelphia (2)).
This Saturday's game begins at 7:30PM with coverage on the Boston Cannons Web Radio Network Presented by New Balance starting at 7:15PM. The Cannons will provide media outlets with a complete post game write-up immediately following the game's conclusion.
