CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The Kernels had hit three home runs in their previous 13 games before Friday night’s Midwest League game against Wisconsin.
Then they went and banged out three in one inning.
Matt Pali, Matt Brown and Michael Collins hit home runs in the KernelsÂ’ seven-run second inning and the Kernels beat Wisconsin, 9-4, before a YMCA Night a crowd of 2,980 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.
Brandon Wood also hit a home run for the Kernels (7-8 second half, 49-35 overall), who improved to 3-5 in July. Wisconsin fell to 5-10, 36-48.
Pali and Brown belted back-to-back home runs leading off the KernelsÂ’ second. A walk, error and Quan CosbyÂ’s RBI single plated another run and the fourth scored on Blake BalkcomÂ’s RBI single. Collins greeted Wisconsin reliever Kenly Chang with a three-run home run over the left-field wall that boosted the KernelsÂ’ lead to 9-2.
Cosby had three hits and Collins two.
WoodÂ’s two-run home run in the first inning had given the Kernels a 2-1 lead. Wisconsin tied the game, 2-2, in the top of the second before the Kernels unleashed their scoring onslaught. The seven runs matched the KernelsÂ’ high scoring inning of the season, set April 15 against Clinton.
Chris Hunter (5-3) scattered 11 hits over seven innings and did not strikeout a batter. But he also walked none and was the winning pitcher.
Wisconsin southpaw Jason Mackintosh (2-4) took the loss, allowing seven hits and eight runs (four earned) in 1.2 innings.
NIBLETS – The Kernels pushed past the 100,000 mark for the season in attendance Friday night. The Kernels have drawn 101,868 in 44 home dates, an average of 2,315 per game. … The Kernels continue a four-game series against Wisconsin on Saturday night.
