July 9, 2004 - Central Baseball League (Central League) News Release

Durham, N.C. -- Shreveport starter Thad Markray was sold to the Kansas City Royals on Friday, July 9 and will be assigned to the Double-A Wichita Wranglers. He is the fifth player bought this season and 19th to appear on an affiliated team's roster.

Markray, who was selected as a Central Baseball League All-Star last week, is 8-2 with a 3.05 earned run average this season. He leads the league in wins and complete games (4), while ranking second in strikeouts with 87. In 82 2/3 innings of work, Markray has allowed 75 hits, 34 runs, 28 earned, and walked 26. He was the CBL Pitcher of the Week on June 27 after a blanking Fort Worth, 1-0, in a game that saw him strike out 13 batters and allow only five hits.

Markray was originally selected as a third baseman by the Cincinnati Reds in the third round of the 1997 draft. After spending the first three-plus seasons as a hitter, he became a pitcher where he went a combined 3-4 during the 2000 and 2001 seasons. In 2002, he pitched for the Alexandria Aces and went 11-1 with a 3.81 ERA. Last season, Markray was 4-4 for the Battle Creek Cats, the New York Yankees' Single-A affiliate.
