Two Steel Alumni Selected at annual NHL Entry Draft

BENSENVILLE, IL—The Chicago Steel Hockey Team and United States Hockey League have announced that two Steel alumni and seventeen total USHL affiliated players were selected during the 2004 National Hockey League Entry Draft.

Selected from the Chicago Steel were forwards Matt McIlvane and Travis Morin. McIlvane skated for the Steel this past season; Ottawa selected him in the 8th round, 251st overall. While Morin skated for Chicago through two seasons then spent last season at Minnesota State University in Mankato, MN. The Washington Capitals made Travis their 9th round, 263rd overall, selection.

Matt McIlvane, a native of Naperville, IL, was an alternative captain during is only season with the Steel. In 59 regular season games, he scored 22 goals with 14 coming on the powerplay. He finished with 46 points and 53 penalty-minutes. Matt was also one of the key players in Chicago’s opening round playoff series with Waterloo, where he had 3 points in 3 games before tearing his MCL in a pivotal Game 3 win. The 6’2”, 200 lb talent will be playing for the Ohio State Buckeyes this fall.

Travis Morin was an offensive force during his two-year stint with the Steel. Playing after his high school season in 2001-2002, then joining the Steel fulltime in the fall of 2002. Over his two-year USHL career, he had 26 goals, 34 assists for 60 points in 80 games. This inhabitant of Brooklyn Park, MN looks to be a key contributor for MSU this upcoming season.
