Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release

Cedar Rapids, Iowa– The scoring drought ended Sunday for the Kernels – barely. The light hitting continued, however.

The Kernels managed only five hits – four by Quan Cosby – and for a third straight game were thrashed by the Swing of the Quad Cities, 8-1. The Midwest League baseball game was played before a Manchester Day crowd of 3,382 at Veterans Memorial Stadium.

The Kernels snapped a 27-inning scoreless streak when Baltazar LopezÂ’s sacrifice fly for the second out in the sixth inning. Unfortunately, Quad Cities had scored four runs in the top of the sixth inning and added three more in the seventh for its third straight win in the series, which switches sites Monday for four straight games at DavenportÂ’s John OÂ’Donnell Stadium.

Scott Whitrock and Kyle Phillips hit home runs for Quad Cities, which outscored the Kernels 25-1 in the last three games. Nick Punto, on a rehab assignment from the Minnesota Twins, was 3-for-4, scored twice and drove in a run. Six of the SwingÂ’s 11 hits were for extra bases.

The Kernels, meanwhile, have managed only 14 hits – all singles – the past three games.

Kernels right-hander Kevin Jepsen (6-3) and Quad Cities right-hander Scott Tyler (2-1) hooked up in a pitchers duel for the first five innings, each allowing the other side only two hits.

PhillipsÂ’ run-scoring double in the Quad CitiesÂ’ sixth gave the Swing a 1-0 lead. A ground out scored Phillips before Whitrock unloaded his two-run blast that sailed beyond the Randy Kuehl Honfidence Pavilion in left field. The home run was the 10th of the season for Whitrock and his fourth in seven games against Kernels pitching. All have been hit at Veterans Memorial Stadium. He hit four other home runs at the stadium in finishing second in the Bud Light Home Run Derby before the Midwest League All-Star Game last Tuesday.

Quad Cities blew the game open with three runs in the seventh inning for a 7-1 lead. Punto laced an RBI double that knocked Jepsen out of the game. Phillips greeted reliever Carlos Morban with a two-run home run that boosted the SwingÂ’s lead to 7-1.

Justin ArnesonÂ’s RBI double in the Quad Cities eighth scored Whitrock, who had doubled, and stretched the SwingÂ’s lead to 8-1.
