Unlucky numbers in loss for Timber Rattlers

June 27, 2004 - Midwest League (MWL) Wisconsin Timber Rattlers

FOX CITIES STADIUM -- The Peoria Chiefs scored thirteen runs in the seventh inning Sunday afternoon to beat the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers 15-5. Anthony Monegan had four RBI and Tyler Parker had a two-run homer in the decisive inning. Parker also homered later in the game for the Chiefs. Stuart Pomeranz struck out ten Rattlers over seven innings for his second win of the season.

Pomeranz struck out six and didn't allow a hit over the first three innings. Michael Cox picked up the first Rattler hit of the game with a lead-off double in the fourth. One out later, Bryan LaHair, who was making his Rattler debut, hit a home run just over the wall in left field for his first hit as a Rattler.

Rattler starting pitcher Brandon Moorhead was cruising through six innings. He allowed five hits and had struck out seven. Then, the seventh inning happened.

Matt Pagnozzi started the inning with a sinking line drive to center. Wladimir Balentien had the ball pop out of his glove for an error. Calvin Hayes reached on an infield single. Moorhead committed a balk to move the tying runs into scoring position. Monegan sent a grounder to second with the infield back. Hyung Cho tried to get Pagnozzi at the plate, but the throw skipped in and the Chiefs got on the board.

Juan Ovalles relieved Moorhead and his first pitch to Cody Haerther was smacked for an RBI single to tied the game 2-2. Parker dropped a sacrifice bunt to move runners to second and third. The next nine batters reached in the inning. Daric Barton was walked intentionally to load the bases and set up the double play. John-Paul Davis sent a high chopper to short that was misplayed and the Chiefs took the lead. Joe Mather and Omar Pena followed with RBI singles to chase Ovalles and bring Ruben Castillo out of the bullpen.

Castillo gave up an RBI single to Pagnozzi and an error on the play allowed a second run to score. Hayes singled to load the bases and Monegan followed with a three run double. Haerther doubled in Monegan and Parker homered for a 13-2 Peoria lead.

Mike Nesbit drove in a Rattler run in the bottom of the seventh with a sacrifice fly and LeHair gave himself a three RBI day with a run scoring double in the bottom of the eighth.

Parker hit his second homer of the game in the ninth to make it 15-4.

Nesbit homered to left in the bottom of the ninth for the final score.

The Rattlers welcome the Dayton Dragons to town for a four game series starting Monday. Tom Oldham (4-3, 3.35ERA) is the scheduled starting pitcher for the Rattlers. Dayton will send Justin Gillman (0-1, 7.62) to the hill. Game time is 7:05pm.
