Portland leaves Midwest road trip with a split after 2-1 loss

June 23, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1) - Portland Timbers News Release

The Milwaukee Wave United defeated the Portland Timbers 2-1 as Johnny Torres tallied a goal and an assist, and the Timbers finished the match two players short before 1,131 Wednesday night at Uihlein Soccer Park.

Following a spate of fouls and cautions called by referee Ricardo Salazar in the final minutes, the match spiraled into three players being ejected between the two clubs, with tempers flaring on both sides.

Portland defenders Gavin Wilkinson and Lee Morrison both received red cards and will serve out one-game suspensions against Vancouver on July 2.

The Timbers (8-4-0, 24pts) have lost three of four as Milwaukee (2-7-1, 7pts) earned its second win of the year.

Byron Alvarez showed some footwork in the 17th minute, beating out a handful of Milwaukee defenders and chipping it over the head of Wave United goalkeeper Jim Larkin for the 1-0 advantage. The goal was Alvarez' sixth of the season.

Milwaukee evened the score in the 38th when Chad Dombrowski bounced the ball into the back of the net on a corner kick play. Torres was credited with the assist.

Torres tallied the game-winning goal in the 61st, bending a free kick from 25 yards out around the Timbers wall and into the top-right corner of the net.

Goalkeeper Bayard Elfvin collected eight saves while facing 18 shots in his first start of the season in place of Josh Saunders, who was held back after aggravating a hip injury in Portland's win over Minnesota on Tuesday.

Despite working with only eight field players, the Timbers nearly equalized in the 90th when Alvarez got loose in the right side of the box and managed to release a shot that flew wide-right.

Milwaukee held an 18-9 advantage in shots over the Timbers and a 8-3 edge in corner kicks.

The Timbers take on the Utah Blitzz of the Pro Soccer League in their opening match of the 2003 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup on Wednesday, June 30. Kickoff from Salt Lake City is 6:30 p.m. (Pacific).
