Wave United Game Notes

June 23, 2004 - USL First Division (USL-1) - Milwaukee Wave United News Release

WAVE UNITED (1-7-1, 4 PTS.) V. TIMBERS (8-3-0, 24 PTS.) GAME #10 / HOME GAME #5

BROADCAST: 540 AM, WRRD ("The Word")

Wave United Update: Milwaukee enters tonight's contest at 1-2-1 home / 0-5-0 road / 1-7-1 overall following a pair of losses this past weekend at Virginia Beach (5-2 on 6/18) and Richmond (2-0 on 6/19). Wave United has now lost three straight games for the second time this season, a streak that Coach Art Kramer's team had to endure just once during the 2003 campaign when Milwaukee finished 18-10-0 (54 pts.) to claim the A-League Regular Season title.

Tonight's match against the Timbers is the second of four against Portland this season. The Timbers claimed the first meeting between the clubs with 3-2 (OT) victory on 5/29 at PGE Park in Portland, OR. Rookie sensation Alan Gordon scored all three of Portland's goals, including the game-winner in the 96th minute as the Timbers rallied from a 2-0 deficit to record the victory. Portland enters tonight's action at 4-2-0 home / 4-1-0 road / 8-3-0 overall following last night's 1-0 win at Minnesota. Gordon, the league's leading scorer, notched his 11th goal of the campaign in the 31st minute to account for the game's only score. The win snapped a three-game losing steak for Coach Bobby Howe's squad, which had opened the season with seven consecutive wins.

Following tonight's game, Wave United returns action here at Uihlein Soccer Park this upcoming Friday, June 25, 7:35 PM when it hosts the arch-rival Minnesota Thunder. It's another "Fireworks Friday" here at Uihlein, with post-game fireworks sponsored by the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, CBS-58, and Steinhafels. Wave United will also travel to Minnesota for a re-match with the Thunder on Saturday, June 26, 7:05 PM at Griffin Stadium in St. Paul, MN. The two meetings with Minnesota will close out the four-game season series between the clubs.

Tickets ($12 adult, $8 children under 12) are available at the Wave / Wave United Office, 510 W. Kilbourn Ave, Suite B (414-224-WAVE), the Uihlein Soccer Park Ticket Office (7101 W. Last Outing v. Timbers:

Sat. 5/29 @ Portland Timbers 3, Wave United 2 (OT) A-4,067

Wave United suffered its second straight heartbreaking loss in the Pacific Northwest as it fell to the Portland Timbers 3-2 in overtime before 4,067 fans at PGE Park in Portland, OR. Coupled with a last minute setback the prior night in Seattle (a 2-1 loss to the Sounders), Wave United dropped to 0-3-1 (1 point) for the 2004 campaign. The Timbers, who were led by rookie Alan Gordon's hat trick, improved to 5-0-0 (15 points).

Similar to the previous night in Seattle, Milwaukee jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute on a header by Todd Dusosky off an assist from Greg Howes. The goal stood up as the only first half tally as goalkeeper Jim Larkin stopped Portland's Byron Alvarez on a point-blank header in the 41st minute.

Wave United extended its lead in the 50the minute when Johnny Torres scored off a free kick from 30 yards out to give Milwaukee a 2-0 advantage. However, the Timbers responded with goals from Gordon in the 65th and 85th minutes, both scored on headers from Shawn Saunders and Jake Sagare, respectively. Gordon capped off his sensational night by hammering a low bouncing shot past Larkin from 15 yards away six minutes into the extra session.

Portland 'keeper Josh Saunders, younger brother of Shawn, posted just one save in recording the victory while Larkin registered four in the loss. Milwaukee has now played three overtime games so far this season after having played just one during the entire 2003 campaign.

Last Outing: Sat. 6/19 @ Richmond Kickers 2, Wave United 0 Attendance - 2,353

McColm Cephas' shorthand goal in the 80th minute broke a scoreless tie and sparked the Richmond Kickers to a 2-0 win over Milwaukee Wave United Saturday night (6/19) in an A-League contest at the University of Richmond Stadium in Richmond, VA. The win improved Richmond's record to 7-3-3 (24 points) while dropping Wave United to 1-7-1 (4 points).

Similar to Friday night's match at Virginia Beach, the second half proved to be Wave United's undoing. Milwaukee had a golden opportunity to take the lead in the 58th minute when Johnny Torres was tripped up in the penalty area by Richmond goalkeeper Ronnie Pascale, but Pascale stopped Greg Howes on the ensuing penalty kick to keep Milwaukee off the board.

The momentum still seemed to be in Milwaukee's favor when Kickers forward Mike Burke was issued a second yellow card (thus receiving a red card ejection) for a hard tackle on Chad Dombrowski in the 71st minute, but Wave United failed to produce any offense with the subsequent man advantage.

Meanwhile, Cephas scored in the 80th minute on a header from eight yards out as redirected a free kick from Paul Lekics past Milwaukee goalkeeper Jeff Richey, who was making his first start of the season. Joey Worthen added an insurance tally from Lekics in the 90th minute on a low, hard shot that beat Richey to the right post.

Wave United Notes:

*The originally scheduled May 14 season opener v. Edmonton, postponed due to wet grounds at Uihlein Soccer Park, has been rescheduled for Thursday, August 19, 7:35 PM at Uihlein Soccer Park. Fans with tickets for the May 14 game may exchange them for that game, or any other 2004 Wave United regular season contest. Call the Wave Office at 414-224-WAVE (9283).

*The five goals surrendered by Milwaukee in the 5-2 loss @ VB on 6/18 were the most yielded by a Wave United squad, and the most given up by a Milwaukee A-League squad since the Rampage dropped a 5-2 decision at Portland on 8/30/01.

*Wave United's 2-1 loss to Seattle on 6/13 at Pat Jones Field was Milwaukee's first loss on the PJF in five career outings. Wave United was 3-0-0 last season before playing to a scoreless draw with Minnesota on 5/22. In each case, the games were shifted to the PJF due to wet or unplayable conditions on the Stadium Field at Uihlein Soccer Park.

*Wave United has trailed just once at halftime (1-0 v. Sea on 6/13) so far this season. However, Milwaukee has been outscored 15-2 after halftime and has blown three-of-its four halftime advantages.

*Jim Larkin's shutout on 6/6 v. Syracuse was the 25th of his seven-year A-League career (91 games) and the 9th of his two-year Wave United career (25 games).

*The two shutouts suffered by Wave United 5/21 and 5/22 were the first back-to-back shutouts in team history. Wave United was shutout six times in 2003, three of which occurred at Uihlein Soccer Park.

*The scoreless draw on 5/22 with Minnesota was also the first tie in Wave United history. Wave United did not have any ties when it posted an A-League best 18-10-0 (54 pts.) record in 2003. Coach Art Kramer's team played just one overtime period the entire season, that coming in a 1-0 (OT) win at El Paso on 6/22/03.

*Minnesota's 1-0 aggregate goal victory over Wave United on 5/21 and 5/22 denied Milwaukee a chance to participate in the 2004 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup tournament. It's the first time since the 2000 season that a Milwaukee A-League club has not qualified for the U.S. Open Cup

*Wave United's season-opening five-game winless streak tied the longest winless streak in Milwaukee A-League history. The '97 Rampage squad also went winless in five straight (all losses) from 5/25/97 thru 6/20/97.

*Four players have logged double duty with both Wave United and the U.S. National Futsal Team so far this season. Forwards Greg Howes and Johnny Torres, along with defender Pat White and goalkeeper Nick Vorberg all saw action in a CONCACAF Qualifier v. Honduras last month at U.S. Cellular Arena. The Keith Tozer coached U.S. squad defeated their Central American rivals 7-1 (5-1 on 5/18, 2-0 on 5/20) in the two-game total goal series to enable the U.S. to advance to the eight-team CONCACAF Futsal Championships July 23-31 in Costa Rica. The top two teams from the latter competition will qualify for the FIFA Futsal World Championship, which will be held in Chinese Taipei Nov. 21 - Dec. 5, 2004.
