6-1 Pioneers voted No. 1 in Week 9 Poll

May 26, 2004 - arenafootball2 (af2) News Release

CHICAGO - By a 33-point margin, the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Pioneers have been selected as the No. 1 team in the af2 Coaches' Poll, the League office announced today. It is the second time this season the Pioneers have secured the top spot in the weekly poll.

The Pioneers received 276 points, including 18-first-place votes, on their return to the No. 1 spot. The streaking Birmingham Steeldogs went from fifth to second in this week's poll, amassing 243 points with four first-place tallies. Coming in third was the Quad City Steamwheelers with 206 points and two first-place votes. The San Diego Riptide received the only other first-place vote but they did not accumulate enough total points to make the Top 12.

Other teams that posted gains in this week's poll include the Louisville Fire, Oklahoma City Yard Dawgz, Hawaiian Islanders, Florida Firecats and Memphis Xplorers. Louisville improved from sixth to fourth, Oklahoma City jumped from ninth to fifth and Hawaii moved from eighth to sixth. The Firecats shot up to seventh from tenth place, while the Xplorers secured the tenth spot after being in 12th last week. Also improving was the Tulsa Talons, who returned to the 12th spot this week after missing the cut in Week 8.

In Week 9, three games are scheduled between Top 12 teams. The No. 1 Pioneers head to Louisville to face the No. 4 Fire on Saturday at 7:30 p.m. In Birmingham the No. 2 Steeldogs renew their rivalry with No. 8 Tennessee Valley on Saturday at 8:30 p.m., while the 10th ranked Xplorers head to Florida to face the No. 7 Firecats on Saturday at 7:30 p.m.

Each week during the season af2 coaches vote for the Top 12 teams in the league by ranking them one through 12 on a ballot. Teams ranked first receive 12 points with the point value decreasing by one for each place below first, meaning a team ranked 12th receives one point. Total points determine the Top 12 list. In the event of a tie in total points, the team with the greater number of first-place votes is ranked higher. The af2 Coaches' Poll is announced every Wednesday during the regular season. Coaches are not allowed to vote for their own team and the poll results have no bearing on postseason qualification.
