Lakeland Loggerheads News Release

LAKELAND, Fla. – With the game knotted at five goals a piece and time winding down in the overtime session, Loggerheads defenseman Bobby Clouston broke in on Manatees goalie Sean Weaver all alone. Clouston beat Weaver high to the blocker side to propel Lakeland to the 6-5 victory.

On “Guaranteed Fight Night”, each team landed a few jabs and seemed to have the other on the ropes only to see them fight back to even things up.

Lakeland jumped out early with a goal from Chris Harped (Curtis Sayler, Lenny Bonanno) at the 3:59 mark of the first period. Miami answered back with goals from Greg LeColst and Darcy Johnson to take a 2-1 lead.

The Loggerheads opened the second period with a goal from Joe Seroski (Jeff Glowa), just over five minutes in to even up the game at 2-2. Miami jabbed again as Johnson tallied his second of the game putting Miami up by one.

Clouston netted his first goal of the game midway through the second and Chris Cerrella rocketed home a slapper 3 minutes later to put Lakeland up 4-3. Again the Manatees had an answer as LeColst scored his second of the game on the power play to send the teams to the dressing rooms all tied up at 4-4.

Miami would break the tie as Steve Howard beat Lakeland goaltender Carl Poissant less than two minutes into the period. The Loggerheads again had the answer as Seroski scored a power play goal (Rich Spiller, Cerrella) at 6:13.

As the seconds ticked away in overtime and a shootout looming ahead, Poissant made a big save, cleared the puck to his defenseman Spiller who found Clouston streaking up the wing. The puck found the back of the net with just four tenth of a second remaining to complete the weekend sweep of the Manatees.

The Loggerheads will face off with the Miami Manatees, Orlando Seals, Alabama Slammers, Jacksonville Barracudas and the Macon Trax in the WHA2’s inaugural season. All games will be broadcast on www.irn.fm.
