Colonel Claw’d’s Ransom To Raise Money For Junior Achievement

April 5, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release

Bakersfield, Calif. – The Bakersfield Condors mascot, Colonel Claw’d, has been kidnapped and is being held for ransom, according to sources inside the Condors office. A ransom has been offered in the amount of $10,000.

A video was shown on the CondorsVision big screen during the first intermission of Friday’s game. It featured two perpetrators wearing stockings over their heads and dressed in San Diego Gulls jerseys, striking the Colonel with hockey sticks and binding him. Junior Achievement is helping the Condors free the Colonel, by selling playoff tickets to raise money. JA volunteers and supporters will be selling tickets to Games 1 and 2 of the Taylor Cup Playoffs for just $5.00 apiece. Half of the proceeds raised will go towards Junior Achievement.

JA places volunteers in the classrooms to teach them business and career skills and about the free enterprise system. The organization acts as a catalyst to bring the business community and the schools together.

“We’re excited by our partnership with the Condors,” said Junior Achievement of Bakersfield President Heather Haxo Phillips. “Not every child has the opportunity to be a pro athlete, but every child should have the opportunity to be successful in life. This partnership with the Condors helps us empower kids in Kern County.

The Condors will also help out Muscular Dystrophy Association – Bakersfield District, with a “Fill the Skate” event next weekend. MDA representatives will be at the Condors first playoff game next Friday night, collecting donations before the game from 5:15 – 7:00pm in front of the Garden.

They will also be stationed around Bakersfield on Saturday afternoon in three locations, asking passers-by to help “Fill the Skate.” Volunteers will be at the corner of Rosedale and Coffee, California and Stockdale and Ming and Oak, from 10:00am – 2:00pm. Anyone donating to the “Fill the Skate,” either on Friday or Saturday, will receive a voucher for $2.00 off any ticket purchase for Game 2 of the Taylor Cup Playoffs on Saturday, April 12th.

The Condors host the Idaho Steelheads tonight, in the final match of the regular season. The first 2,000 fans will receive a Condors 5th Anniversary Cap, courtesy of Real Rock 104.3 and R.A. Kleiner Insurance. Game time is 7:00pm and the doors open at 6:00pm.

The Condors will host Games 1 and 2 of the 2003 Taylor Cup Playoffs against the rival San Diego Gulls on April 11th and 12th. Individual tickets are on sale now at the Garden box office. For more information, call 324-PUCK (7825).

Individual tickets can be purchased at the Centennial Garden Box Office, which opens at 10:00am Monday through Saturday, by calling Ticketmaster at 322-2525, online at ticketmaster.com or stopping by any Ticketmaster location. Season tickets and group outings may be purchased by calling 324-PUCK (7825) or by visiting the Condors office next to Centennial Garden.

Condors droppings: Games 1 and 2 of the Taylor Cup Playoffs against the San Diego Gulls at Centennial Garden next weekend will both be carried live on Bright House Networks Ch. 21. Bright House Networks is formerly Time Warner Cable.
