O'Connell Steps Down
February 24, 2003 - ECHL (ECHL)
South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC The South Carolina Stingrays announced today that Sean O'Connell is stepping down as team President to become the Marketing Manager for the Charleston Division of Comcast Cable. O'Connell has been with the Stingrays since being hired as the team's Vice President of Sales and Marketing in the summer of 1999.
"This was easily the hardest decision that I have had to make since getting into the hockey business seven years ago," said O'Connell. "This has been a very rewarding season for our team. We have continued our strong tradition of success on the ice and made some real progress on the business side. It is certainly going to be hard to step away from the ownership group, the front office staff, the coaches, players and the fans."
His position with Comcast will keep him in the Low Country.
"I am excited about this opportunity and the challenge of a new career path that will keep my family here in Charleston," added O'Connell.
Under O'Connell's leadership, the Stingrays enjoyed their first sell out crowd in over four seasons on February 8, 2003 and the franchise is on pace to increase attendance for the first time in the team's ten year history. O'Connell has helped the team's corporate revenue increase for three straight seasons as well.
"Sean will be missed," explained Stingrays Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons. "He has certainly been a tremendous asset to this organization, a pleasure to work with and a good friend."
O'Connell, a 28-year old, spent two years in the Roanoke Express front office as the Assistant General Manager and the Director of Ticket Sales, prior to his arrival in the Lowcountry. Before his stint in Roanoke, he spent a season with the Tallahassee Tiger Sharks. The native of Salisbury, MA will leave the Stingrays front office effective Monday, March 3rd.
The Stingrays are expected to announce O'Connell's replacement later this week.
