Braves can't complete comeback vs. Mets

DANVILLE, Va,- The Danville Braves clawed their way back from an early 6-0 deficit but ultimately fell just short, losing to the Kingsport Mets by a score of 7-6. One night after managing only three hits, the offense roared back to life for 11 hits Friday night.

Kingsport (25-28) opened the scoring in the 2nd inning with a solo home run by Gavin Garay off Danville starter Kyle Muller. Muller, pitching for the first time in over two weeks, surrendered just the lone run in two innings of work.

The Mets seemed to break the game open in the 3rd inning with five runs off Braves' reliever Jaret Hellinger, giving them a 6-0 advantage. The big blow came on a grand slam by Dan Hoy, who came into the game batting just .169.

Danville (27-28) finally got on the board with a pair of runs in the 5th inning, snapping a 22-inning streak of not scoring at home. William Contreras hit a 2-run home run, his fourth of 2017, to cut the Mets' lead to 6-2. The Braves would score three more in the 7th to cut the deficit to a single run, 6-5.

In the 9th, an RBI double for the Mets' Raphael Gladu gave them an insurance run that would loom large in the bottom of the inning. With the Mets ahead 7-5, the Braves tried to muster one last valiant comeback attempt. With two outs, Griffin Benson reached via error, and Kevin Maitan singled to keep the inning alive. Jeffrey Ramos singled to score Benson, pulling the Braves to within one run.

A wild pitch then allowed both runners to move up, putting runners on second and third with the ever-steady Justin Smith at the plate. But Smith would strike out, ending the game and sending the Braves to their fourth consecutive loss.
