Ottawa 67's News Release

OTTAWA - Playing in front of 16,221 of their most energetic young fans on NHL Ice, the Ottawa 67's extended their winning streak to four games Wednesday morning with a 2-0 shutout win over the Peterborough Petes in their annual School Day Game at Canadian Tire Centre.

The red-hot Leo Lazarev stopped all 23 shots he faced in goal to pick up the shutout, while Drake Rymsha scored what would stand as the winner six minutes into the second period. Noel Hoefenmayer added some insurance with an empty net goal late in the game in front of a crowd full of screaming, cheering schoolchildren.

"It was a really special atmosphere for our players to play in front of that many people and that many loud people," said Head Coach Jeff Brown. "The fans were very loud and they helped our guys put on a solid performance today to get the win."

After a scoreless first period in which neither team could muster much offensively, Ottawa opened the scoring in the second period as Rymsha got in good position in front of the net and pounced on the rebound of a Jared Steege point shot to notch his 10th goal of the seasons. The eventual winner came just a few seconds after Lazarev denied Logan DeNoble on a breakaway to keep the game scoreless.

Despite outshooting the Petes 33-22, the 67's faced a very hot Dylan Wells, as the Pete's goalkeeper made some key saves in the third period to give his team a chance to get back in the game. Hoefenmayer erased any thoughts of a comeback when he netted his sixth of the year with under a minute to go.

The 67's also had a strong defensive performance and were hot on the penalty kill as they kept the Petes off the board through seven powerplay opportunities.

Both Rymsha and Lazarev were amazed by the atmosphere at Canadian Tire Centre for the rare morning tilt.

"It was a cool feeling to get that goal and to get those kids even more fired up than what they were," said Rymsha. "It was a really cool atmosphere just to hear how loud they were and how much fun they seemed to have in the stands. It made us have more fun and brought us back to when we were that age."

"It was a great feeling," said Lazarev. "There is no better feeling in the world than to play in front of that many kids and hear their chants. It gave us an extra boost and we were able to win another game and I got a shutout so it was just a great feeling overall."

The 67's return to action this weekend with a pair of road games on Friday in Niagara and Saturday in Barrie (8-3-2 on the road this year). The club returns home after that trip to host the Windsor Spitfires on November 25.
