66ers Fall Short in Semi-Finals Game 1 to Energy 107-102

TULSA, Okla. - Two Oklahoma City Thunder assignees, Byron Mullens and Kyle Weaver, finished with double-doubles, but the Tulsa 66ers fell to the Iowa Energy 107-102 Friday night at the Tulsa Convention Center in Game 1 of the NBA D-League Semi-Finals. The largest crowd in franchise history watched as Mullens put in 11 points and 12 rebounds, while Weaver added 19 points, 10 assists and four blocks. Fellow Thunder assignee Mustafa Shakur finished with two points, five rebounds and four assists, but left the game as a precaution when his foot was stepped on late in the first half.

In a first quarter that saw contested shots on both sides, and continued throughout the game, the 66ers shot 42.1 percent (8-19) from the field while the Energy made 10-of-27 (37 percent). Darian Townes had six points for the Energy, as they capitalized on seven offensive rebounds in the quarter. Mullens, Deron Washington and Moses Ehambe led Tulsa with five points apiece, as there were three lead changes and three ties in the period before going into the break tied at 21.

The Energy started the second quarter on a 7-0 run, capped by a Denham Brown jumper with 10:54 remaining in the first half. The 66ers battled back to within 35-32 after six straight points by Latavious Williams, including a thunderous dunk at the 6:10 mark. Iowa outscored Tulsa 19-12 the remainder of the half, and took a 54-44 lead into halftime. Led by Brown's 11 points in the quarter, the Energy shot 54.2 percent from the field, while the 66ers shot 37 percent. Larry Owens had 11 second quarter points to keep the game within reach.

Two Townes free throws with 7:14 left in the third quarter sparked a 12-3 run by the Energy that put them ahead 72-53 with 4:17 remaining. The 66ers pulled to within 76-65 following a DeVon Hardin dunk, but a free throw by Curtis Stinson gave the Energy a 12-point edge going into the final quarter. Townes had 10 points in the quarter, as the Energy shot 8-for-22, while Washington had eight points in the period for the 66ers, who shot 6-for-18.

The fourth quarter saw a series of runs by both teams, as a Wink Adams three-pointer with seven minutes to go in the game capped a 19-6 run by the 66ers and brought them back to within 88-84. The Energy matched with an 8-0 run of their own, extending their lead back to 96-84 with 4:49 left. Then Tulsa battled back with an 11-2 run, capped by a Weaver lay up that pulled the 66ers to within 98-95 with 1:23 remaining in the game, but the Energy made free throws down the stretch and it was too much to overcome. Brown and Curtis Stinson led Iowa with nine points each in the quarter, as they shot 8-for-15 from the field and 13-of-15 from the free throw line. Weaver and Ehambe had eight points apiece for Tulsa, as the 66ers connected on 12-of-15 attempts from the field, and 7-of-8 from the charity stripe.

Including Mullens and Weaver, the 66ers finished with six players in double figures scoring. Owens had a team-high 20 points, while Washington added 15 points and five rebounds. Ehambe connected on 3-of-6 from three-point range en route to 13 points, while Williams had 10, both off the bench.

The Energy also finished with six players in double digits scoring, led by Brown with a double-double of 28 points and 12 rebounds. Stinson also had a double-double with 20 points and 17 rebounds, to go along with eight assists, while Townes put up 20 points and nine boards off the bench. Jeff Trepagnier scored 13 points, while Mark Tyndale and Pat Carroll each scored 11.
