Inland Empire 66ers News Release
San Jose, CA- Brendon Sanger delivered a homer as part of a three-hit game to lead the Inland Empire 66ers of San Bernardino to a 5-4 win versus the Giants at San Jose Municipal Stadium. The win was Inland Empire's sixth consecutive victory and the first time that the Sixers have swept a four-game series at San Jose since the clubs began playing in 1987.
Sanger got Inland Empire (20-18) going in the second with a two-run homer off San Jose starter Jake McCasland (0-4). It was Sanger's second homer of the season and made it 2-0. The Sixers took a 3-1 lead in the fifth on Jose Rojas ' RBI double. Jose Rodriguez (4-2) started on the mound for Inland Empire and delivered five innings of five-hit work allowing just one run with no walks and six Ks. In the top sixth Sanger doubled and then beat out a play at the plate on Troy Montgomery 's two-out RBI single to left making it 4-1. Giant's Manager Nestor Rojas was ejected arguing the call at the plate. The Giants answered with a pair of runs versus 66ers reliever Winston Lavendier in the bottom of the sixth make it 4-2 but righty Greyfer Eregua calmed things down with 2.1 scoreless innings out of the pen. The 66ers got an insurance run in the eighth when San Jose (15-23) reliever Caleb Simpson walked Jordan Serena to open the frame. Serena moved to second on Sanger's third hit of the game, a single to center. Later in the inning with two outs and two strikes on Montgomery, Simpson spiked a wild pitch to score Serena from third making it 5-3.
Righty Sam Holland, who had entered with two outs and a man in scoring position in the eighth and escaped found himself in a jam in the ninth. With a run already in to make it 5-4 and runners at the corners, Holland got San Jose three-hole hitter Bryan Reynolds to bounce out to first and end the game. Sanger and Rojas had three and two hits respectively for the Sixers. Three of the 66ers' four wins in the series were one-run decisions.
The Sixers open a series at Stockton on Tuesday at 7:10 pm. The contest can be heard live at 66ers.com.
