Lehigh Valley IronPigs News Release
The Lehigh Valley IronPigs (60-41) broke the game open late with a four-run eighth en route to an 8-2 win over the Louisville Bats (50-51) on Saturday night at Louisville Slugger Field.
Trailing 3-2, the Bats had the tying run at second with one out in the seventh, but RHP Michael Mariot (1.0 IP) got a pair of lineouts to end the inning.
Louisville took an early 1-0 lead with a run in the first as Carlos Triunfel reached with a one-out single and scored from first on Scott Schebler's RBI double.
In the top of the fifth, Andrew Knapp became the first Lehigh Valley baserunner of the night when he reached on an error charged to Bats 2B Hernan Iribarren. Later in the frame, Knapp advanced to third on David Lough's double and both runners scored on Darnell Sweeney's go-ahead two-out, two-run single to give the Pigs a 2-1 lead.
Louisville had runners at first and second with one out in the home half of the inning, but RHP Frank Herrmann came on in relief of Pigs starter Phil Klein and got Jermaine Curtis to ground into a 6-4-3 double play and end the threat.
Herrmann (1.2 IP, 2 H, R, ER) got the win for the Pigs to improve to 6-1 on the season.
Klein (n/d) gave up one run on six hits while walking two and fanning five in 4.1 IP.
Nick Williams' solo shot off of Bats starter Robert Stephenson in the top of the sixth opened up a 3-1 lead for the IronPigs. The home run was the 10th of the season for Williams (2-4, HR, 2 RBI, 2 R).
Stephenson (6-6) gave up the three runs (one earned) on three hits to go along with seven strikeouts in six innings of work.
The Bats cut the lead to 3-2 with a run in the bottom half of the sixth as Jesse Winker led off with a double, advanced to third on a single and scored on an error charged to Lough in right field.
In the afore-mentioned four-run eighth, Knapp delivered a two-run single in the inning while Williams and J.P. Crawford each came through with RBI singles of their own to give the Pigs a 7-2 advantage.
In the top of the ninth, Sweeney (3-4, 2 2B, 2 RBI, 2 R) reached with a one-out double, advanced to third on a groundout and scored on Taylor Featherston's RBI single to give the IronPigs an 8-2 lead.
RHP Luis Garcia (2.0 IP, 2 H, 2 K) had a scoreless outing in relief for manager Dave Brundage's squad.
The series wraps up on Sunday at 6:05 p.m. as RHP David Buchanan (6-5, 4.28) will be on the bump for the IronPigs against Bats LHP Amir Garrett (2-1, 2.19). This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
