Pensacola Ice Flyers News Release

ROANOKE, Va.- The Pensacola Ice Flyers (17-15-6) saw their captain, Corey Banfield, register his 200th professional point with an assist on the game-tying goal before he had the overtime goal to down the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs (13-20-6) by a score of 4-3 on Saturday night inside the Berglund Center on Saturday night.

The Dawgs struck first when Michael Turner scored an unassisted goal 8:56 into the first period. The Ice Flyers answered back when defenseman Brad Bourke scooped up the puck in the defensive zone and skated down the ice and put the puck in the back of the net for an unassisted, shorthanded goal with 5:02 left in the first.

The score remained 1-1 until 10:26 left in the second when Daniel Vernace put Roanoke back on top. The Ice Flyers again answered when Riley Spraggs fired a quick shot right after a faceoff for a power play goal just 3:03 after Vernace's goal. Josh Harris and Corey Banfield had the assists. Vernace struck again to give Roanoke what would prove to be their last lead of the game when he scored his second goal of the period with 3:17 remaining in the middle period.

The score stood at 3-2 Roanoke until Josh Cousineau ripped a shot from just inside the blue line for the extra attacker goal with 26 seconds remaining in regulation. Banfield and Bourke had the assists on the game-tying marker. Then, just 35 seconds into the extra frame, Banfield settled a cross-ice pass from Bourke and backhanded it into the net to secure the victory.

John McLean stopped 30 of the 33 shots he faced from Roanoke and his record now stands at 5-5-0 on the year.

The Ice Flyers close out the weekend tomorrow when they head to Huntsville, Ala., to take on the Huntsville Havoc at 5 p.m. Central.
