2nd Season Of Silver State Diamond Challenge Begins Tonight In Reno

May 3, 2010 - Pacific Coast League (PCL1) - Las Vegas Aviators News Release

LAS VEGAS (Monday, May 3): The second season of the intrastate rivalry will begin tonight when the Las Vegas 51s, Triple-A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays, travel to Northern Nevada to face the Aces, Triple-A affiliate of the Arizona Diamondbacks, at 6:05 p.m. at Aces Ballpark (9,000).

In 2009, the 51s and Aces developed the Silver State Diamond Challenge and the "Silver Plate Trophy" to add to the excitement to the rivalry for the two Pacific Coast League teams that represent the state of Nevada.

The 16-game season series will be played in Reno (May 3-6; July 27-30) and at Cashman Field (July 1-3; August 25-29). If the season series is tied after 16 games, the Silver State Diamond Challenge winner will be determined in true Nevada style with a draw of the cards.

The inaugural season series was tied 8-8 and the two Mayors met at home plate at Aces Ballpark on October 5, 2009. Las Vegas Mayor Oscar Goodman pulled a "7" and Reno Mayor Bob Cashell pulled a "6" and Las Vegas captured the inaugural S.S.D.C.

"I look forward to another exciting season between the two Nevada teams," Goodman said. "I also look forward to winning the Silver State Diamond Challenge for the second consecutive season," Goodman said.

In addition to the Diamond Challenge, Mayors Goodman and Cashell have placed their own wager in which the losing city's Mayor will wear the other team's jersey for a full day of city business - including a city council meeting. The Mayors have also agreed, to the losing Mayor, personally donating $100 per game for the difference in wins from the 16-game season series to the winning Mayor's charity of choice.
