Jersey Significance
The Theme Jersey was designed by the Red Deer Rebels in conjunction with the Canadian Hockey League. The jersey pays tribute to Central Alberta's military presence from the middle decades of the 20th Century. While Red Deer does not house a large military presence today, people are reminded of the past by visiting Springbrook, the home of the Red Deer Regional Airport, and formerly CFB Penhold. Many houses, facilities, and hangars from the base still exist today, and provide historical character for one of our newest communities.
CFB Penhold was the military hub of Central Alberta, originally opening in 1940 as an Air Force base during WW2. It took on its "CFB" title in 1966 after unification of the forces, and was also adjacent to the "Diefenbunker", a now defunct and demolished Regional Emergency Government Headquarters. From 1961 to 1986, the base also housed a Radar Squadron as part of NORAD. CFB Penhold was officially decommissioned in 1994.
All proceeds from this auction going towards supporting the Dominion Command Poppy Trust Fund. All donations to the Poppy Fund are placed in trust to be used for the care and benevolent support of Veterans and their dependants.
