Charlottetown Islanders News Release

The Charlottetown Islanders made 17 picks during the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League draft on Saturday. But their biggest addition may have been through a trade.

The Islanders sent defenceman Luc Deschenes, a first round draft pick in 2018 and a second round draft pick in 2017 to the Acadie-Bathurst Titan. In exchange, they received 19-year-old defencemen Guillaume Brisebois and Jake Barter.

General Manager and Head Coach Jim Hulton said they put an emphasis on building the backend and he called Brisebois, a Vancouver Canucks prospect, one of the top defenceman in the league.

"We're awfully excited with today's acquisition," Hulton said shortly after the deal was announced. "Brisebois is that elite defenceman that we've been searching for. Adding Barter will also help add depth to our blue line."

Although happy with the additions to his team, Hulton talked about the loss of Deschenes. Deschenes spent two and a half seasons with the Islanders after being dealt from Victoriaville midway through the 2013/14 season.

"It came at a cost like anything does. Luc was a great teammate and a great person. That's the downside of this business and it was a tough phone call to make to Luc. I guess we both understand it but it was an emotional call for both of us."

Hulton said the addition of two 19-year-old defenceman shows that the team has a strong core of talent.

"It's exciting because I think it sends a message that we believe in our core players coming back first and foremost. Also I think it sends a message to our fans that we weren't content with winning just one playoff round last year. We think with that core of special players we have, like Daniel Sprong and Filip Chlapik that we need to make an effort to be an elite team this year."

Charlottetown also sent forward Brad Kennedy to Halifax in exchange for three draft picks. They received a 6th and 9th round pick in 2016 as well as a 4th round pick in 2017.

The Islanders first pick in the draft was 18th overall. With the selection, they took defenceman Marc-Olivier Alain. Hulton said Alain's speed is a big strength and that the team's scouting staff really believed in him.

"He's got the mobility and the feet right off the hop to step in and play and I think that's what really stood out to our staff."

With their second round pick the Islanders selected forward Nathaniel Doyon of St-Georges, QC.

Hulton said the Islanders were surprised to see Doyon still on the board and were happy to jump at the opportunity to select him.

In the third round, the Islanders selected Upper Tantalon, N.S. native, goaltender Dakota Lund-Cornish.

In the sixth round, the Islanders took defenceman Dominic Hachey from Moncton, N.B. as well as Newfoundland native, forward Kyle McGrath.

Also in the sixth round, P.E.I. native Thomas Casey was selected by the Islanders.
