Walla Walla Sweets News Release

WALLA WALLA, WA - Cornerstone players are important to developing continuity on and off the field. It is especially rewarding when those cornerstone players returning were All-Stars the previous season. The Sweets will be returning 2016 WCL All-Star Nick Nyquist (Gonzaga) for the 2017 season.

"It's great to have Nick back in our line up this coming summer," said Sweets manager Frank Mutz. "He's a tremendous player and incredible teammate.

"Not only did He put up solid numbers last year, he was a true leader on and off the field. We will be counting on Nick to have another All-Star season."

Nyquist made his mark early in the season as one of the hot bats in the lineup, and was successful in becoming one of the most consistent performers as an everyday cornerstone in the lineup. He finished in the top three on the Sweets roster in hits (#2 with 45), homeruns (T-1 with 4), doubles (#2 with 8), triples (#3 with 3), RBI (#2 with 29), plate appearances (#1 with 204), walks (#1 with 20), OPS (#2) and Runs Created (#2). He was also among the league leaders in many of these same categories. While primarily manning the hot corner, he also was productive as a first baseman and DH. It is anticipated that he will have a similar role in 2017. He is heading into his red-shirt sophomore season, and will look to be a major contributor to the Bulldogs efforts to win the WCC after a full redshirt his sophomore year.

"I am excited to be coming back to Walla Walla, and to build on the success from last summer that we had as a team," said Nyquist while in Spokane on campus at Gonzaga. "The coaches, players and organization make it such a great place to play for the summer and I am looking forward to winning a WCL Championship."

Nyquist, a Coeur D'Alene native, played a season with the Wenatchee Applesox in 2015. He continues the trend of Gonzaga Bulldogs who played in the league previously to finding great success on the Borleske diamond. In 2011, Alex Stanford followed up a season in Wenatchee in 2010 with a breakout season in Walla Walla in 2011, going on to set WCL records (at the time) in hits and winning the 2011 WCL MVP award.
