200th Former Beloit Player Makes It to the Majors

September 21, 2016 - Midwest League (MWL1)
Beloit Sky Carp News Release

BELOIT, Wisc- The Snappers reached a milestone as the 200th former Beloit player reached the Major Leagues as left-hander Jose Torres will join the San Diego Padres on Wednesday. The Padres host the Arizona Diamondbacks on Wednesday night with first pitch slated for 8:10 CT. Torres is the seventh former Snapper to reach the Big Leagues in 2016.

Torres appeared in 44 games out of the bullpen in 2015 for the Snappers. He posted solid numbers going 4-5 with a 2.69 ERA in 73 2/3 innings. Torres surrendered just 55 hits, 23 walks and 22 earned runs while punching out 80. In a somewhat backward stat, he was tougher against right-handers holding them to a .191 batting average while limiting left-handers to a .259 average. The biggest improvement came in control as he possessed a 2.8BB/9 compared to his career average of 3.7BB/9.

Torres was sent to the San Diego Padres this past December as part of the Yonder Alonso and left-hander Marc Rzepczynski deal.

Torres spent the majority of the 2016 campaign at Advanced-A Lake Elsinore and Double-A San Antonio. Torres went 0-2 posting a 3.55 ERA in 20 relief appearances for the Storm. At the Double-A level he put up even better numbers going 1-2 with a sparkling 1.24 ERA in 25 appearances out of the bullpen. He gave up 20 hits, 12 bases on balls and five earned runs in 36 1/3 innings with San Antonio in the Texas League. Torres got a late season promotion to Triple-A El Paso of the Pacific Coast League where he appeared in three games in relief posting a 3.38 ERA in just 2 2/3 innings of work. He surrendered four hits, one walk and one earned run while recording two strikeouts.

Torres has a number of weapons as his fastball sits in the low-90's but can get as high as 96, a plus slider and a changeup. With that pitching arsenal and continued improvement in command of all his pitches Torres can become a shutdown bullpen asset for the Padres in 2017.

The Snappers didn't earn the number of wins that they had hoped but the talent of the A's system showed in the 35th year of professional baseball in Beloit. As more talented minor league players come through Beloit, the number of players to make it to the Big Leagues will continue to rise in year 36 of professional baseball in Beloit and beyond.

The Beloit Snappers are a member of the Midwest League and are a fifth year Class-A affiliate of the Oakland Athletics. Stay tuned to the team website and social media for all up to date information.
