17 Osprey Alums on Active Opening Day Rosters

April 4, 2016 - Pioneer League (PL)
Missoula PaddleHeads News Release

MISSOULA, Mont. - Opening Day for Major League Baseball has arrived and 17 former Missoula Osprey players have made a 25-man roster in the major leagues, with two others finding themselves on the MLB Disabled List.

These numbers do not include Arizona Diamondbacks manager Chip Hale, San Diego Padres manager Andy Green, Padres hitting coach Alan Zinter nor Padres bullpen coach Doug Botchler all with Osprey ties.

Hale managed the Osprey for two seasons - 2000 & 2001. Green played for the Osprey and Hale in 2000 and then returned to Missoula as its manager, leading the O's to the Pioneer League title in 2012. Zinter was the hitting coach for the Osprey in 2008, while Botchler was the pitching coach for the O's in 2013.

Tony Barnette (2006) is the latest player to make the big leagues becoming the 57th Osprey alum to do so, since the franchise came to Missoula in 1999. Barnette, a 32-year-old rookie for the Texas Rangers, took an unconventional path to the big leagues, spending four years in the Arizona Diamondbacks minor league system before heading to Japan for six seasons.
