Viehoff strikes out seven straight in 10-3 win

LumberKings strike for 10 runs to take series opener

APPLETON, WI - Tim Viehoff struck out the first seven Wisconsin Timber Rattlers he faced and was backed by a LumberKings offense that cruised to a 10-3 win on Monday night at Neuroscience Group Field. Anthony Jimenez and Gareth Morgan each had three hits to lead the LumberKings (14-20) offense.

The games started with LumberKings starter Tim Viehoff in total control. The lefty earned his first win with Clinton striking out the first seven batters he faced, a new season-high for consecutive strikeouts by LumberKings pitching. Viehoff (1-4) did not allow a Timber Rattler (17-17) to reach until the fourth inning.

The LumberKings were the first to score, scoring twice in the top of the fourth inning. Nick Zammarelli drove home both runs in the inning. With the bases loaded, Zammarelli lifted a ball to left center field that one hoped the wall to bring home the first two runs of the game.

The lead did not last long as Wisconsin finally strung hits together off Viehoff in the bottom of the fourth inning. Demi Orimolye singled to leadoff the inning, the first hit for the Timber Rattlers in the game, and he was followed by three more Wisconsin batters to reach base safely. Viehoff gave up his only runs in the fourth, a three spot that gave the Timber Rattlers their only lead of the night.

The LumberKings backed Viehoff with an immediate answer in the top of the fifth inning. With two out in the fifth inning, Joe Rizzo doubled to right center field to scoring Gareth Morgan and Bryson Brigman. Rizzo drove home three runs in the game and factored into all but one of the LumberKings rally.

Leading 5-3, the LumberKings continued to add on. In the top of the seventh inning, two more runs were added when three hits, a walk, and a fielder's choice combined to stretch the lead to 7-3. Jimenez third and final hit of the night capped the rally driving home Luis Rengifo.

The LumberKings put the game out of reach in the top of the eighth inning. Morgan began the scoring with his third hit of the night, a double down the left field line that scored Nick Thurman. Luis Liberato followed with a near inside-the-park home run. Liberato drove a ball to center over the head of Timber Rattlers centerfielder Monte Harrison and raced around to third for an RBI triple. As he slid into third the ball kicked away from Wisconsin third basemen Jose Cuas and Liberato raced home beating a throw to the plate with a head first slide for the 10th and final run of the game.

Jack Anderson and Jeffeson Medina combined to shutout the Timber Rattlers over the final four innings. Anderson had his best outing of the year. He faced nine batter and set them all down striking out four in four perfect innings of relief work.

Medina allowed a leadoff single in the ninth but rebounded to retire the next three Timber Rattlers to preserve the LumberKings win.
