Augusta GreenJackets News Release
Augusta, GA-The GreenJackets offense was overpowered by the pitching staff of the Greenville Drive Friday night at Lake Olmstead Stadium and found themselves on the back end of a pitcher's duel with a 4-1 loss. The loss dropped the GreenJackets to 10-13 on the season.
"We played hard till the end, we never gave up," said Manager Carlos Valderrama. "This is a tough ballpark to hit in. We crushed some balls that did not go anywhere."
The game was scoreless after five innings with Drive starter Michael Shawaryn and GreenJackets starter Caleb Baragar pitching well. Baragar lasted five and two thirds innings and struck out five. He allowed two runs off of seven hits and faced the minimum through the first three innings.
"He did a pretty job and he held their offense for the first five innings," said Valderrama. "In the sixth, he gave some signs of getting tired and he struggled with command."
Shawaryn struck out five through six innings of shutout ball. He had a no hitter going until Friday night's hero Kevin Rivera singled to lead off the sixth. It was the only hit he gave up on the night.
Santiago Espinal led off the top of the sixth with a single for the Drive. With two outs, Chris Madera singled to advance Espinal to second. Jerry Downs followed with a single to score Espinal and break the scoreless tie, ending the night for Pope. Madera ultimately came in to score on a wild pitch.
The GreenJackets threatened in the bottom of the eighth when they put runners on second and third with only one out. Frandy De La Rosa hit sacrifice fly to cut it to 2-1 but that was as close as the GreenJackets would get. Despite the loss, the GreenJackets were able to work long at bats and show great plate discipline late in the game.
"Tonight, they had an idea of what to do at the plate," said Valderrama. "They try hard with no results but the good thing is that they are competing."
The GreenJackets will be back in action Sunday afternoon at Lake Olmstead Stadium for the final game of the four game series against the Drive. First pitch is scheduled for 2:05pm with the gates opening at 1:00pm. It is North Augusta Parks and Recreation Day and the first Bark in the Park of the season presented by Garden City Pet. It is also Princess and Pirate Day as part of Junior Jackets Kids Club Day presented by Associated Credit Union, EdVenture Kids Museum, Pediatric Partners of Augusta, and Tum-E Yummies. Kids ages 12 and under will also be able to run the bases after the game. Before the game, kids will be able to play catch on the field with the players.
Stephen Woods Jr. (1-1, 2.16) will start on the mound for the GreenJackets against Logan Boyd (3-0, 2.57) for the Drive.
The 29th consecutive season of professional baseball in Augusta is underway.
