: Canaries Name Eddie Gerald New Hitting Coach

SIOUX FALLS, SD- The Sioux Falls Canaries announced on Monday morning that they have hired Eddie Gerald to be the organization's new hitting coach.

Gerald, 46, played in 1,323 games over 17 professional seasons. He holds a .263 career batting average to go along with 1,265 hits and 769 RBI. The St. Paul's, NC native was originally drafted by the Kansas City Royals in the 3rd round of the 1989 MLB Draft. He appeared in over 500 minor league games with the Royals, Cardinals, and Twins, including a stint at the Double-A level with the Nashville Sound in the Twins organization during the 1994 season.

Gerald reached the independent level in 1995 with the Prairie League's Aberdeen Pheasants, where he appeared in 145 games over parts of two seasons. He also spent the 1998 season with the Sioux Falls Canaries, posting a .299 batting average while collecting 96 hits in 85 Northern League games. In all, Gerald appeared in over 800 games at the independent level, including time with the Fargo-Moorhead RedHawks, St. Paul Saints, and Duluth-Superior Dukes.

Gerald became the hitting coach of the Shreveport Sports in 2004, spending parts of three seasons with the organization before taking over as manager for the remainder of the 2008 season. He has also spent the last four seasons serving as hitting coach for the Minnesota Blizzard Elite program.

"We are excited to have Eddie on board as our hitting coach this season," said Canaries Field Manager Mike Meyer. "He brings nearly two decades of professional playing and coaching experience to our staff. We know that he will be able to relate to our players and communicate his hitting philosophy in a relaxed environment. We can't wait to get him back to Sioux Falls."

The Sioux Falls Canaries enter their 25th season on May 18th against the Sioux City Explorers at Lewis & Clark Park. The home portion of the 2017 schedule opens up on Saturday, May 20th at the Birdcage.
