Colorado Eagles News Release

The Colorado Eagles, proud affiliate of the Colorado Avalanche, announced Thursday that they have re-signed forward Johnny Lazo for the 2016-17 season. The 5-foot-6, 170-pound center burst onto the scene as a rookie last season, posting 21 goals and 15 assists in just 34 games with Colorado. Lazo would go on to be named the ECHL's Rookie of the Month in January after scoring nine goals in his first nine games as an Eagle. In addition, his shooting percentage of 21.9% led all ECHL rookies during the 2015-16 season and was good for 3rd in the ECHL, overall.

"I'm definitely exited to be coming back to play at the Budweiser Events Center," said Lazo. "Looking at some of the guys we've already signed and our new affiliation with the Avalanche, we definitely have the potential to do something really special this year."

The Winnipeg, Manitoba native joined the Eagles last January after beginning his first season as a professional in the Serie A league in Italy, where he starred for the Sterzing/Vipiteno Broncos, posting 16 goals and 19 assists in 22 games.

"What Johnny was able to accomplish last season as a rookie was phenomenal," said Eagles head coach Aaron Schneekloth. "He quickly proved to be one of the biggest goal scoring threats in the entire ECHL and we are very excited to see what he is able to do with a full season in front of him."

Lazo enjoyed a standout career at both the collegiate and major-junior levels. Lazo registered 132 points in 136 games with the University of Alberta, including 55 goals. He would be named to the CIS All-Rookie Team in 2011, the CIS All-Star Team in 2013 and helped the Golden Bears capture the CIS National Championship in 2014.

Prior to making the move to the collegiate level, Lazo generated 170 points in 217 WHL contests with the Tri-City Americans. His major-junior career was highlighted by a 2009-10 campaign which saw Lazo score 39 goals and add 32 assists in 72 games with the Americans.
