Cougars Shut Out Again, Lose Series

Team Ends Losing Road Trip, Looking Forward to Homestand

COMSTOCK PARK, Mich.- For the first 25 games of the season, the Kane County Cougars (16-11) scored at least one run. The changed after the weekend as the West Michigan Whitecaps (19-11) shutout out the Cougars for the second consecutive game with a 2-0 final from Fifth Third Ballpark Sunday afternoon.

The Cougars were aggressive to find the scoreboard, but came up empty each try. In the first with runners at the corners and nobody out, the Cougars tried for the double steal, but saw Luis Basabe get thrown out at the plate. Three innings later, the Cougars had runners at the corners again and tried to score Luis Silverio from third on a shallow fly ball into left field. A solid throw from Cole Bauml retired Silverio at the plate and kept the game scoreless.

West Michigan made the missed opportunity sting a little more as they were able to score in the bottom of the frame to break the scoreless tie. Cody Reed (1-1) loaded the bases with nobody out before Danny Pinero's easy roller on the infield brought in the game's first run. West Michigan tacked on another run against Reed in the fifth.

West Michigan's pitching staff handcuffed the Cougars for the second consecutive game as Greg Soto (3-0) tossed six shutout innings with five walks, but eight strikeouts. Reed matched his counterpart with eight strikeouts as well, despite the loss. The Whitecaps' bullpen picked up right where Soto left off with three shutout frames and only two base runners allowed. Trey Szkutnik earned a hold and Bryan Garcia picked up his league-leading seventh save of the year.

The Cougar bullpen kept the game within reach as Riley Smith tossed two and one-third shutout frames including stranding two runners on in two occasions. Austin Mason threw a perfect eighth inning.

The Cougars head home to begin a six-game homestand at Northwestern Medicine Field. Monday's series against the Great Lakes Loons will feature Cougar right-hander Jon Duplantier (1-0, 1.07) against Great Lakes' Jordan Sheffield (0-1, 3.79). First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. For tickets call 630-232-8811 or visit kccougars.com.
