Indoor and Arena Football History
The Wheeling team was first slated to be the Wheeling Ironmen, but the threat of an Arena Football League lawsuit led the league to seek a change. Instead, they grabbed the name and modified the logo of the postponed Sioux Falls entry, creating the Steel Valley Smash.
The Smash featured two different color schemes in its two years of operation. The logo at left features the first, which the team utilized in 1999. The next year, the logo and uniforms changed to incorporate green as a main color.
Following the IFL's demise, a new franchise, the Ohio Valley Greyhounds, took the field in the National Indoor Football League.
