Lightbulb Syracuse ABA to get new name

http://blog.syracuse.com/news/2007/0...ange_name.html

Bullies to change name; contest to rename team
Posted by cmiller June 14, 2007 14:08PM

Bowing to public pressure, the Syracuse Bullies basketball team announced today that it will change its name.

A fan contest to rename the team will begin immediately. Ballots can be found at all Central New York Wegmans supermarkets and at participating Wendy's restaurants. The contest will run for the next two weeks. The team will announce its new name on July 12.

The ballots include five names: Bullz, Netz, Sentinels, Snowballers and Avalanche. The ballot will also inclue a line for write-in vote.

A write-in vote for Bullies will be a wasted vote. Team officials insist that name will not be used.
Some local residents had expressed displeasure with the team's original name, saying it promoted violence.

Also today, the team named Terrill Dean the head coach. Dean is a Syracuse native and a Bishop Grimes High School graduate. He was the head basketball coach at SUNY Canton.
OK...What do you think the new name should be? (Could be irrelevant if the "Syracuse Slam" get in the PBL)

How about the Syracuse Bawlers...cause that's exactly what the people against the name "Bullies" are doing!

Here's hoping the Syracuse Slam work out and join the PBL...

I'm voting for Snowballers!!!!

Hasn't the owner of this team seen the movie, "Clerks"?

That's a pretty erotic name for a basketball team.

Is this part of Uncle Joe's initiative to have different minority owners?

Wow. Just Wow.

From the information I'm getting I doubt the "Syracuse Slam" PBL connection even exists.

I actually think we should back the ABA on this. They got some heat from a bunch of well meaning but bored people who got upset at a name. They accepted it and have gone a different tact. I hope it works.

The Syracuse Suckers. In honor of their sponsors and season ticket holders.

I am surprised that Wegman's is involved so it might be a good sign.

And Joe speaks out in favor of changing the name:

http://www.wtvh.com/Sports/Default.a...&NStoryID=5243

The team was named months ago, but only after the negative publicity did Joe decied to speak up. Joe's usual fluffy intro to te Syracuse ownership group:
Quote:
"Upstate NY has proven to be an excellent area for ABA basketball. The fans really enjoy the up-tempo style of ABA play and of course, the affordable prices. That's why Rochester businessman Nicholas Fitts contacted us and asked about placing a team in Syracuse. His love and passion for basketball and his commitment to nurturing the hottest new team, not only in upstate NY but also in the ABA, is sure to bring a unique energy to the sport. We are very pleased to have Nick as part of the ABA."
The name for 'the hottest new team' was part of the release. I guess he mised that part...

So Syracuse is the hottest new team in upstate NY? DOes that mean the Corning Bulldogs have folded already?
