Default Amarillo Team Name

Amarillo team is going back to the old days and will be name the Amarillo Gold Sox. The Gold Sox was the name when Amarillo was a AA club back in the days. During this time they were affilated with the San Diego Padres and players as in Tony Gwynn has worn the Gold Sox jersey. They will not change very little to the logo & jersey.

That's way cool! Another former ULB franchise leaving for the American Association! And going back to a classic name -- the Gold Sox! (Not to be confused with the Marysville Gold Sox of the Horizon Air Summer Series collegiate wood bat league.) A lot of defections from the ULB and Northern League. Who would like to join the Amarillo Gold Sox?

How good is the American Association?

It's decent. You get a handful of players each season that get signed to affiliated ball. Pitching could be deeper (at what level couldn't pitching be deeper).
We had Class AA ball here in Dogpatch for a number of years before they left town and the Wichita Wingnuts came. While we don't get the prospects we did when the Wichita Pilots/Wranglers were in town (like, say, Johnny Damon's two weeks here), we still get some good players. (The prospects come to town in early August when for the National Baseball Congress World Series summer college tourney).
We'll see how it goes with the NL teams coming in. Kansas City will help Wichita (and visa versa). Add in Lincoln, Sioux Falls and Sioux City, and you have a nice set of rivalries within decent travel times.
There was talk about an NL team in Topeka before the NL break-up, but Topeka still doesn't have a decent pro venue. (It has a couple nice fields, but not much in the way of seating capacity. One is in a county park, one is run by the school district and one is run by NCAA D II Washburn. None will allow beer.) I don't know where that stands today.
We'll see how it goes.

Good to know. I am still glad the Amarillo Gold Sox are coming back. Let's see how the former NL teams are received in the AA. Sounds like it could be a league to watch for.

Default Name change nullifed...

Amarillo baseball fans, you just got screwed! Read this article and post your opinions here and at the newspaper's website...

Apparently, the new team can't use the Gold Sox name because it's been trademarked.
