Gary, IN: On Saturday, January 19th, 2008, over 120
participants braved arctic temperatures and winds to
attend the Second Annual Steel City Coaches Clinic and
Youth Sports Camp. Former All-Star major league
outfielder—Marquis Grissom, retired Indiana State
University NCAA Hall of Fame Coach--Bob Warn and New
York Yankees Minor League Pitching Coordinator--Nardi
Contreras shared their baseball enhancement skills and
life experiences with an eager group of parents,
coaches, mentors and youth. The event was held at the
Genesis Convention Center.

Grissom shared his workout regime and his distaste for
performance enhancing products that some athletes
depend on. He credited his mother and youth coaches
for the work ethic that made him an indispensble
member of many winning teams. Contreras spoke
extensively in easily understood terms on pitching
mechanics, philosophy and conditioning. His handouts
were in demand by all. Warn spoke of the intangibles
that made his collegiate program elite and how being
positive to youth on and off the field can provide
those needed experiences to grow from. His
motivational tidbits about being the “significant
other” to young players were well received by adults
and youth alike.

The full day of events included the Youth Sports Camp,
where children of all ages tested their skills in
golf, jump roping, football and soccer. A bounce
house was the anchor station and entertainment was
provided by Steelhead mascot Steelie and Sparkles the
Clown. There were many smiling and painted faces that
left the venue.

The day ended with a reception hosted by the Majestic
Star Casino Hotel as local legend and current Detroit
Tigers hitting coach --Lloyd McClendon shared his
insight on the state of baseball and the steroids
issues. All participants are looking at returning for
the next event as the Northshore Amateur Sports
Academy continues to “raise the bar” for our youth.
