On Saturday, January 18th, 2008, history was made when the BSN of Puerto Rico and the national team finalized an agreement with Jordan Brand where they will be associated for five years providing uniforms for all teams in the BSN and the national team at all levels in all international competitions.
The President of Basketball Senior National Felix "Felo" Rivera, was present at the Atlantis Hotel, located on Paradise Island, part of Nassau in the Bahamas over the weekend to close the agreement.
Among the executives present during the negotiations was Mr. Garry Cook, the new President of Brand Jordan, Ted Clark who is the Chief Operating Officer of Brand Jordan, Richard Marks who works as a retailer of the brand and Todd Washington who is a consultant for Brand Jordan. Management of Brand Jordan will be in our press conference on February 26 where he will present the 2008 season and the teams of the BSN.
Management also will have a strategic meeting to reach the market in Puerto Rico and will be at the league opener on February 28(Moved from February 25th) at the Coliseum of Puerto Rico.
The contract will be presented on Tuesday at the meeting of the executive committee of the league for approval and then on Saturday at the meeting of the board of directors. The league has a letter of intent and then if approved will sign the final agreement. The agreement is effective beginning in the 2008 season which begins on February 28.(It will be more than approved as 11 will vote and 1 will not agree)
"This agreement is extremely important for the BSN that we are going to have a new sponsor in the quality of Brand Jordan," Rivera said after reaching the agreement.
Rivera said he had the opportunity to talk with Michael Jordan and the former NBA player and Charlotte Bobcats Owner is well satisfied to engage in this project which is to drive the BSN to become one of the most important leagues of America and in the world.
This agreement, the first carried out by the international brand, provides sports equipment to teams in the league and the rights to sell merchandise in their venues and markets. Brand Jordan also sell the goods of equipment in the stores that will open soon in the island.
"We must harness the support of fans where we will provide quality products and with this we can attract more fans," said Rivera.
In 2009 Puerto Rican National Team Gear along with custom shoes featuring the Puerto Rican flag, BSN Teams and City Logos will be on Sale for everyone via online and through retail stores. The Director of Footwear, Gentry Humphries, has several ideas that will be developed this year for a January 2009 start of this segment.
"This includes support for long-term economic considerations gives additional support that will give us success in our tournament," concluded the president of the league Felix "Felo" Rivera
Carmelo Anthony (Denver Nuggets) a former Ponce Lions prospect and or Puerto Rican decent , which is one of the major players of Jordan Brand, will be working on several projects in Puerto Rico that will be announced later after the NBA season is over.
