The Hawaiian Islanders are going out of business after losing more than $5 million on three seasons as Hawaii's only professional sports franchise.
The decision announced Wednesday by the arenafootball2 team follows an eight-week effort to raise $525,000 in new revenue from mainly corporate sponsors and season ticket sales.
"Despite our best efforts, we ultimately ran out of time, falling short of our goal by $225,000, and came to the prudent business decision to cease operations," said Chris Dey, executive director and general manager of the Hawaiian Islanders.
