View Full Version : Question for NIFL fans
The Dayton paper reported the NIFL loses an average of 50 balls per game. That number seems way too high.
So what is the average.

I would say 20-25.

I'd be suprised to see even 20 per game. I'd say 10 or less.

Rocky, I agree that 50 might be a bit of an exageration, but I've seen more than 10 per game in Arena football regularly and NIFL doesn't have nets, so it has to be more...

Maybe that's a statistic we need to have teams report each week... :D

Heavens no! You'd end up with teams reporting that they gave away 1000 balls, so they could appear to be the best at "giving away" footballs.

The amount of lost footballs depends on the team and stadium. Fort Wayne has a very high ceiling height, that allows teams to go for many more FG they couldn't go for in other stadiums, and without nets = more lost footballs. Plus the average combined score was 88 points a game... 10+ lost balls just on XP's alone.
10-15 on XP per game
1-5 on kickoffs out of bounds
1-5 on throw-away by the QB
5-10 on FG attemps
- maybe an onside kick out of bounds
- player scoring and giving the ball to someone in the endzone
they can add up in a hurry. I say FW had 20-35 lost per game.

The amount of balls lost in Wheeling is a pretty direct inverse correlation to the quality of the kickers (as WesBanco Arena has nets right behind the goalposts so they don't lose good kicks).
If you get a couple of really bad kickers in there, you're gonna lose a number of balls in Wheeling. There's probably up to 5 or so balls lost by throwaway passes and that sort of thing, too. I caught one of those back in '02.
