Despite the American Basketball Association losing another team out of the Blue Conference, the Vermont Frost Heaves and the rest of the Blue Conference Northeast are all on the same page, according to Vermont's Director of Operations Michael Healey.
The Blue Conference Central-leading Strong Island Sound folded as of Friday night and, along with the Corning Bulldogs, is the second Blue Conference organization to go under this month.
Vermont was scheduled to play Corning in Burlington on Thursday, Feb. 28, and Strong Island, ironically, was brought in as a replacement for that game. Another substitution has not been made as of Tuesday.
Representatives from the Northeast division teams – Vermont, Halifax, Montreal and Quebec – met on Tuesday in Burlington in an emergency meeting to make sure all involved are able to play out the schedule, according to Healey. Boston, Manchester and Westchester attended the meeting via conference call.
Questions and rumors circulated on Tuesday about whether the ABA itself was going to fold, to which Healey said is not the case.
The ABA lost a number of teams throughout the Heaves' inaugural season last year, including a few during the playoffs. In addition to the losses of Corning and Strong Island, the Syracuse Raging Bulls of the Blue Conference North have also folded.
Several teams, primarily in the Red Conference, have played fewer than five games. The Beijing Aoshen Olympian, Los Angeles Push, Chicago Throwbacks, Cicero Cometas USA, St. Louis Stunners and South Chi-Land Infernos have played a total of 16 games through Dec. 10. In the Blue Conference South, the Orlando Aces, Atlanta Vision, Bahama Pro Show, and Georgia Gwizzlies have played a total of 10 games, while Vermont plays in its 10th game tonight at Halifax. There are 33 teams on the ABA's Web site, abalive.com, set to join the league as expansion teams for the 2008-09 season.
Tuesday evening, Healey said he had spoken with the team and they are safely in Halifax, Nova Scotia and are set for tonight's tip at 7:15 p.m.
