View Full Version : Dayshawn Wright gets second chance in CBA

The Albany Patroons just signed Dayshawn Wright to a contract.

Dayshawn, the #1 draft pick in the CBA last year, played a handful of games with Minot last season.

He was also the focal point in an ABA-CBA battle over his services - immediately after the Skyrockets picked him, the Buffalo Silverbacks claimed to have signed him the next day, noting that Dayshawn's career would go up "like a skyrocket." There was also some bantering from Joe Newman about Dayshawn Wright's agent being a doofus (JN's words).

So after an abortive run with the Syracuse Raging Bullcraps, Dayshawn gets another chance in the CBA.

To make room for Dayshawn, Albany placed Tom Sadler on IR.

Thoughts?

He better be good or he will just be like the last team he played for Bullcrap

obviously I am personally unhappy because Sadler has under-performed with this injury since the first week he arrived at camp. I am happy for Wright. But how we will see how he performs.
I think Edelin was the guy who got in to trouble last year. But maybe Wright did too?

Dayshawn has a lot of talent and with the right coaching, I believe he can be a success. I'm happy to see him get a second chance... Lets hope he can make better decisions this time around.

Skyrockets Plummet to Earth

By DAVE CALDWELL, Staff Writer dcaldwell@minotdailynews.com

The Minot Skyrockets are used to making their living on the basketball court. But dealings with another kind of court led to two Skyrockets players being released from the team Friday after a run-in with the law early Friday morning.

DayShawn Wright, 21, and Andre Joseph, 25, were arrested by Minot police on various charges following a traffic violation. Wright was the team’s first-ever first-round draft pick, and Joseph was the team’s newest acquisition, having played in his first game as a Skyrocket Thursday night.

Police docket reports indicate that police stopped a vehicle in the 400 block of North Broadway around 12:45 a.m. for disregarding a traffic control device. Officers discovered at that time that Wright was driving with a suspended license. Investigation revealed that both Joseph, whose given first name is Tyronzic, and Wright had open containers of alcohol in the vehicle, and were also both allegedly in possession of a small amount of marijuana.

Skyrockets head coach Chris Daleo’s reaction was swift and decisive when The Minot Daily News interviewed him around 9 a.m. Friday.

“First off, I’m just glad the Minot Police Department was doing their job and got that idiot (Wright) off the street before anybody was hurt or any property damaged,” Daleo said. “I mean, to drive around with a suspended license, whether you’re a Minot Skyrocket or not, there’s no excuse for that. So I’m just glad the police department was doing their due diligence and taking care of that. I’m happy about that.

“Secondly, that type of behavior is not acceptable, and he won’t be a part of the Minot Skyrockets,” he said. “We can’t have that. It’s easy here in Minot. Good team, good housing, good ownership and good fans. Players cut themselves, you know?

“We have to work with our community and embrace our community, not raise havoc in our community. So we give (the players) an opportunity to come in here and do good things and improve their games and grow as human beings and become a part of Minot, and if you want to thumb your nose up at it and do whatever you want to do, that’s fine. We don’t want you here. He’s welcome to go to any other club out there and raise havoc in that community. But not here in Minot.”

“My loyalties are to the city of Minot, not to DayShawn Wright,” he said. “And if (Joseph) falls in the exact same category, we don’t want him around, either.”

Wright, whose hometown is listed as Syracuse, N.Y., was subsequently convicted Friday morning in Municipal Court on the driving under suspension charge, a Class B misdemeanor. Judge Mark Rasmuson sentenced him to five days in jail, all suspended, and issued fines and fees that totaled $225. Wright was also convicted of having an open container of alcohol and disobeying a traffic control device, both traffic offenses, and fined a total of $70 for those infractions.

Later Friday, Wright appeared before Judge William McLees in Northwest District Court on a Class A misdemeanor charge of possession of a controlled substance-marijuana. Although Assistant Ward County State’s Attorney Roza Larson said the state would not be seeking jail time in the case, Wright pleaded not guilty to the charge. The charge carries a maximum penalty of a $2,000 fine and $300 in mandatory fees. McLees ordered a pretrial conference to be set for March 9 at 11 a.m., and also set Wright’s bail at $1,000 cash or corporate surety.

Joseph, who hails from Houston, was also convicted Friday morning in Municipal Court, on a Class B misdemeanor charge of possession of marijuana. Rasmuson handed down a five-day suspended jail sentence with fines and fees totaling $275. He was also fined $50 for having an open container of alcohol as a passenger.

The 6-foot-7, 230-pound Wright played college basketball at Syracuse University. He appeared in seven games for the Skyrockets this season, averaging 6.3 points and 3.6 rebounds per contest. Joseph played at the University of Oregon. The 6-3, 175-pound guard, who had played in Europe and in the National Basketball Developmental League, was signed this week by the Skyrockets and played Thursday, scoring two points, grabbing four rebounds and dishing out three assists.

“I don’t care whether you score 1,000 points a game or two points a game, you’re expected to come on in here and conduct yourself like a normal human being,” Daleo said. “And driving around on a suspended license at (12:30) in the morning is inexcusable for a basketball player or for anybody.

“I just choose not to have those people around,” the coach added.

If the two players find employment elsewhere in the Continental Basketball Association, Daleo said the league conducts drug testing that all players in the league are subject to. If a player tests positive for drugs, the league fines them.

“Everybody gets tested,” he said. “At the beginning of the year, then once by the middle of the year and periodically after that.”

Well it looks like you guys are bringing a class act into Albany Chuck!

Hey Chuck, I hope to see you at one of the Patroons games this weekend. Come and say what's up if you are there...I'll be the guy in a suit next to the head coach (I'm not hard to find).

Yes, I was at the Patroons game. Dayshawn played, he had a free throw and some early minutes, not to be unexpected when you've just been signed this afternoon, nobody's expecting 25 points and 15 boards.

Amal McCaskill, however, went ape on the Krunk, scoring 37 points, 14 boards and 6 assists in Albany's 120-111 [4.5-2.5] victory. Good game, Albany took an early lead, the Krunk picked up the second and third quarters, and both teams tied for the fourth.

I am glad to see that Dayshawn has gotten another chance in the CBA. I watched him in the local Syracuse HS basketball scene blossom into a dominant player. Hopefully he has his head on straight, talent was never Dayshawn's problem.

Coach Daleo did the right thing with kicking Wright off the Skyrockets. Regardless of the talent Wright has, if he involves himself in drugs or drives without a valid license, he has no business playing-anywhere. There's a good chance that he will repeat.

No question that Daleo did the right thing psbf. He let down his team, city, and fans with his actions. But I think that everyone deserves a second chance. Hopefully he is on the right track now... if he does something like that again, his career in legitimate professional basketball will probably be over.

..the New England Patriots have taken a few players with black marks on their records and turned them into productive players, Randy Moss being the latest. Albany is a lot closer to home, and hopefully DayShawn has learned a couple lessons being on teams that don't make payroll ever since Minot.

Having said that, I have a great deal of respect for Coach Daleo, and he did the right thing booting Dayshawn off the team in Minot.

in second chances also. But after a player finds trouble the first time, it makes me weary of him. I think the Patroons will have to watch him very carefully.
As far as the Patriots, the NFL has always been lenient on troubled athletes, only giving them 'a slap on the wrist' because of the powerfull unions. This is why I hate unions, because athletes get away with anything.

Chuck speaking of the Patroons, when are they going to get the same color jersey as shorts? Please tell me they don't plan to play in green jerseys and gold (or yellow) shorts at home all year long.

..really low attendance for a Patroons game. Other than snowstorms and the like, I don't remember less than 1,000 for a game at the Armory.

that the Patroons may not be alone. In pictures that I've seen, the Explorers are wearing road Blue uniforms at their home games.

I tell you what. Why don't you call the Patroons front office yourself, and then you can get your answer directly from the source. Instead of making suppositions about what you think is going on, as to what REALLY goes on.

I ain't getting mad at Chuck. I also am not making suppositions like Chuck said I am. I was simply asking him what was going on. Chuck, since you REALLY know what is going on, could you please help to inform the rest of us? Thanks.
