The Miners defeated the Xplosion 112-98. 1500 tickets sold for the game. This all according to WYMT television.

Final score
miners 112 xplosion 98
The official ticket sales reported at halftime was 2122 but our local news said just under 1500 was at game. So who knows. Our center holds 5300 so its really hard to tell. It was good crowd hopefully word of mouth will draw in bigger crowds for our new team.

Miners 112 - X 98
I think EK won the first quater... they tied the 2nd... Pitt won the 3rd... and they tied the last...
so that's... what... 5 points for the Miners and 2 for the X (I'm new to this whole QWP thingie LOL)
for the reports. I could not find anything. I figured the Miners would make it tough, especially in their place and I'm not really surprised that they have a great turnout. I had forgotten what the capacity was there, but if they had over 2,000, that makes them second best behind RGV. Still, being 1-1 is not bad.

I don't know what the difference was in the tickets unless they were adding season ticket holders who was not there. But I will say this. The crowd was loud!!! To be a new team that know one really knows, they became fan favorites quick...
As for a rundown of the game, the miners started out hottttt. they went up by twenty and i think as high as 24 at one point in the first half. As for the second half , the xplosion should a little bit of heart . they cut it within 9 with 8 mins to go in fourth. They never gave up so their fans should be proud.

Where on WMYT did you find it?
getting the tv but it never connected.
That sounds like the same start that the Miners had here, before the X cut it to one just before the half. that's why they are the X-P-L-O-S-I-O-N. Unfortunately, it looks like the Miners were too powerful for us in the final period. I think East Kentucky is going to make some noise this season. the Xplosion should have a good season as well. Hopefully our crowds will grow and we need wins to help.

Just a bit of info - there were over 2000 in attendance. If I'm correct, there were some charity tickets handed out by one of the sponsors, which probably is the cause for the jump. I don't think it was 500 charity tickets, but there were some. The Miners front office has been extremely good about helping the underprivileged in the community.
I am certain we will be making some noise this season. We are a young but solid group coached by a very passionate coach. We love what we do, and we love representing a fan-base that offers up so much support. Our fans are awesome - Pikeville has really taken a liking to this team, from the front office and administration on down to the players!

Yep. You get three quarterpoints for winning the game, and a quarterpoint for every quarter you outscore your opponent. Think of it as four mini-games that add up to one big game. Properly, the score should be listed as East Kentucky beating Pittsburgh 112-98 [5-2].

Too bad that video had no highlights of the actual game.
nice. But I think they were just trying to get the overall response from the local public. It looks like a nice area, I hope to find someone to go down with when the X visit next time.
I received an update from a Miners official. The official attendence was over 2,200. That makes that the second highest this weekend(RGV had 2,508). To me it does not matter how many were free, they were there.
there are highlights of the game. Click on the Miners website, steer to your right and click on the video box with the picture of the Miners head coach walking in front of the fans. Click on that box and you will get the sports, beginning with that game.
I just realized that my directions may be a little confusing, so here;
Click onto the Miners website and find a list of links to the right. Click on the tv station link(just below the top on your right). The video link is on your upper right.

Disappointing crowd if you ask me...Crowds will dwindle from here on, once this team starts competing for the same dollars with the high schools, college, and UK.
that it did look more like 1,400 on the news footage of the game. But be glad you had that many there. We only had 671 for ours(including some of your supporters).

I respectfully disagree. I thought the size of the crowd we had was excellent (no matter which number you want to use). This was far more than ever attended a Pikeville College game at the Expo Center. They were loud, excited, and I was very pleased to see so many at the game.
And, if the Miners keep winning like they did last night, I would expect attendance to increase over the course of the season.

I would generally agree that the opening attendance for the Miners was encouraging, especially given that the game was on a Sunday afternoon the weekend before a holiday weekend. It wasn't exactly in prime time.
If you want to compare TV sports (a previous poster mentioned UK basketball, which obviously is a big deal in Kentucky, but Pikeville is over two hours away from Lexington. Therefore the choice for 99% of the crowd is watching UK on the tube or going to a Miners game), then the NFL and ending of the NASCAR season probably hurt attendance just as much.

UK, Pikeville College, and yes, high school basketball will affect the Miners.
HS attendance(with local ties) is down whenever UK plays...The Miners(with NO local ties) will be down as well.
why you have to be negative, King. You have a very competitive team and a great enthusiastic crowd. I usually tend to believe the first numbers in attendence(in this case over 2,000). I only saw what the camera provided, which was limited footage. Pikeville looks to be in the midst of nowhere, so fans have reason to be optimistic. From what I've seen of the Miners, they appear to be headed for a great season, which would be good for the local scene down there and a good rivalry for us(Pgh.). I see nothing but positive about this. I'm sorry that you don't think the Miners will last, King, I don't know how you can say that after the games and the support they played and received. But I know you will be proved wrong. From what I saw in the news clips down there, everyone is optimistic about them.
So far the expansion teams seem to be doing well. I can't wait to find out what the attendence in Oklahoma and Atlanta will be for their openers.

Let me remind you all...there was a VIP section as well, where people could eat, drink, and view the game from the balcony that had a nice turn out as well. The crowd was 2,000+. If you could only see how many people I stopped and talked with on the way to the game, during and after. People are loving this team. The support is unlike anything I have ever seen. People want autographs, merchandise, etc. And...like it has been mentioned, if we can continue winning, the buzz will be even stronger. I suspect that by the end of the season (especially if the team continues to win), tickets will be hard to come by.

They share four dates with Pikeville College home games, though two of them are at different times of the day.
The Miners also only play one Friday night home game the entire season, on February 29. I would guess one reason is to avoid high school basketball games.
the weekend attendence figures;
Albany(1,510 and 1,268); Butte(1,258 and 776); PGH. (671); East Ky.(2,217); RGV(2,508) and Yakama(3,169 and 3,005). Great Falls, Minot, Atlanta and Oklahoma have yet to play home.

why you have to be negative, King. .
Not being negative...just realistic.
I have been around basketball in the area for over 30 years, I have a little different perspective than many of the folks.
AND, the "announced" paid attendance of 2200 is laughable....even if one would count the 14 people in the VIP room and the 75 in the private reception....BTW, I was in both rooms so I do know what I am talking about.

I don't get it...the Miners were on the top end in attendance for the league this weekend, and that is evidence that this team will fail??? I guess....whatever. Hey Zach...you watched the game....you didn't think it was a good brand of basketball on the floor? Would you say that the people at the game didn't enjoy themselves and won't come back? You see, whatever the attendance figures, I feel like the people that came had an awesome time. I thought the mascot was awesome (the 4 people on chairs diddy was very entertaining to watch), the atmosphere was top-notch, the Diamond Girls were entertaining (flat out awesome), the Miners had their own theme song, etc. I just don't see how all of that would be in vane and suggest an imminent future failure. And, from all of the people I've talked with...you are in a boat by yourself thinking negative about this team. Not trying to call you out or anything...I'm just saying. I believe you when you say you have 30+ years of bball experience...but, being that this is "PRO" basketball (and not high school or college, which is probably the experience that YOU have), I don't think all of your experience carries as much weight as you think it does concerning the subject of the Miners. It was fun, the crowd had a good time, we got a convincing win, there were giveaways...all around, it was a great night! I expect attendance to rise!

Hey zach, its people like you that try to destroy what small towns finally get. If you don't like the product and you don't think its gonna work. then do us all a favor and don't buy a ticket. I hate people who always are negative. I was there and I personally thought there was more than 1400 but since I watched the game instead of counting heads like you did I really didn't worry to much about it. All I know is I'm excited and this thing will take off . The crowd was loud the game was good this is what our town needs. I spoke to a official today and he said they have sold around 500 season tickets , So we will be up there with the other teams in attendance every game. SO do all of us in Pikeville a favor and don't buy anymore tickets we don't need negative press about this. Stay at home and watch your other sports and don't worry about us , I promise we will be better off without you.

Hey zeke since you have some inside with this a team I ask for one favor and this is out of respect for the other teams, Please ask our announcer to show some respect to the other team. Im proud to be from a town where we believe in courtesy and we do try to show some class. I just don't think when another team shoots an airball the announcer should start chanting it over the mic. Besides he took away the fun for all the fans. Good Luck all year to you guys EK Miners all the way.

No, my experience with eastern KY basketball has not been with"pro" basketball, neither has yours or anyone elses...there has never been "pro" basketball here, but what I am trying to get across is that there are not enough dollars to go around and HS and college will affect the miners.
When families are given a choice of going to watch their kids play 3 or 4 games a week or go see the miners, they will go see their kids.
BTW...No, I am not in the boat alone with my take on the miners...several other LOCAL folks I have talked with think the same thing.
And to answer your questions
1. Yes, decent brand of basketball
2. Most people enjoyed themselves.
3. The mascot does a nice job...one of the parts of the night was the
chair gig.
4. The diamond girls will keep the guys coming.
5. The theme song will not put butts in the seats.
6. The atmosphere was so so...the high school regional tournament is better.
and to add a couple of things:
Laura Ruth Hall did an outstanding job with the national anthem.
The PA guy is irritating, unprofessional, and doesn't know his job...It's not stand up comedy...simply let the fans know what is going on.

I am not trying to destroy anything...just speaking honest opinion.
Who said I didn't like the product? I guess you are now my spokesperson.
I thought the product was good(except for the PA guy, classless)
I will continue to attend as oppurtunity presents itself as I have season tickets...and if I will state my honest, unbiased opinion, if you don't mind.
I was there to take in the whole product.
So yes, I was interested in how many TRULY were in attendance...With this being "professional" basketball, attendance will be VERY important and I don't care if 500 season tickets have been sold, that won't pay the bills...The official attendance numbers of 1200-1400 won't get it either.

an article in your paper(actually 2) about Sunday's game. It includes a picture with a better angle of some of the crowd which leads me to believe that there were indeed well over 2,000 there.

Ok Zach I am going to give you credit. Our PA announcer does need some work. I thought it was classless with the whole air ball thing. I will say I did get to caught up in this whold thread, I apologize to you for saying you couldnt count that high. But I will stand and say I believe there was 2000 there also and if you look at the other attendence figures we were right there with everyone else even if we just had 1400. But I am hearing that they are going to make every home game exciting. We will draw the crowds
We will never sell out but we will hold our own with the rest of the league, in my opinion.
is just a personal opinion in the version of reality. The stats speak for themselves. But I will say this was just the first home game for the Miners and first games tend to draw all the attention(in most cases). Things are looking up for East Kentucky but one game does not make a season, nor do two.
I should place a reminder that the Miners have had much practice and the Xplosion have had a couple(to my knowledge). The X are basically starting over again and I think they had to gell fast in order to get their win at home, on Friday. I'm looking forward to see how they do back home on Wed, while Miners fans eagerly await their teams game tonight in Oklahoma. The Cavalry will be a new opponent and a new challenge for you. But I will not pretend to know what future crowds at your facility will be like. I do hope they will be the same or similar, though.
In my opinion, the public does not go pro vs. school. One day talented school Basketball athletes, in that area, will play for the Miners so it's a win/win thing. That is why the local public embraces the Miners. Don't try to seperate them into a competition of who's right.

Perhaps I did call you out...I should have phrased my personal opinion about your comments better, but, being that we are in disagreement, you won't like what I have to say anyway, because I stand behind the Miners and hope for their success. Also, I do have professional basketball experience. You don't, but I do, which I would have to say gives my own personal opinion a slight bit more weight than yours, being that I have a clearer understanding of what makes a team successful and profitable. The Miners are doing things right, they have a solid amount of sponsors for a first year team, which leads me to believe that people WITH MONEY in the community stand behind the vision of this ball club. Sure, poor people may not come out to a Miners game, but let's be honest, Pike County isn't a county filled with poor folks. People DO have money here, and they love basketball, and will come out to the games.
When families are given a choice of going to watch their kids play 3 or 4 games a week or go see the miners, they will go see their kids.
Trust me...as I was once a little kid with hoop dreams, these kids are going to want to see the highest level of talent in the area. They will want to see the Miners, and all of the other teams that come through to play![/QUOTE]
BTW...No, I am not in the boat alone with my take on the miners...several other LOCAL folks I have talked with think the same thing.
Several is such a vague word. However, one thing I do know --- and I'll underestimate it for you: About...ehhhhh... we'll just say (for your opinion's sake)...1,500 fans enjoyed themselves, and if we sell 1,500 tickets to each game, the miners won't endure much of a loss at all this season from a business standpoint.
And to answer your questions
1. Yes, decent brand of basketball
2. Most people enjoyed themselves.
3. The mascot does a nice job...one of the parts of the night was the

Awesome...you see, Zach, we do agree on several things. As for the theme song, it won't put butts in the seat, but it does add prestige to the ball club. Not many teams have their own personal theme song made, which should tell you what kind of connections the management group of the Miners have.
You are correct...the PA announcer could have showed a bit more class, but...he didn't say anything about the other teams mamas or anything crazy. I'm sure he will get better as the season goes on.
And...YES, Laura Ruth did an awesome job, as always. She has been one of my favorite people in Pikeville, KY since I met her! Just to give her a plug, if you don't have her album, you should buy it!
