I was looking for an official announcement by the GBL or Edm. Cracker-Cats today.
I have not seen anything but, I noticed on the Edm. website(Under Construction) they have a line " Proud members of the Golden Baseball League"

Hey Commish. Congrats on getting the Canadian teams. Next stop Victoria? It's such a beautiful place to visit.

Edmonton was official the moment Calgary was announced. They just didn't want to steal the Cracker-Cats thunder. Though really, this should have been a joint announcement between both teams and the league.

I'm with Jpotter and FlyerFan and Mary, now I really can't wait for next season to start.

Sounds like more the next stops are Saskatoon and Kamloops.

Victoria could draw well and be a quality franchise providing they have a real baseball park built. The Capitals in the Canadian League played on a fastball field with a portable mound brought in for the games. They'd need to upgrade Royal Athletic Park to a baseball field before I'd say they are ready to join the GBL though. Attendance was not a major problem for them as they routinely drew 2,000 to their games though.

There's a proposed soccer team angling for Royal Athletic, which happened to host U-20 World Cup games last summer. The caveat: if Portland and Vancouver are bolting for MLS, and nobody replaces them, then Victoria ain't happening for USL-1... but maybe PDL?

Baseball in Victoria, by my guess, requires a new facility.

Edmonton Cracker-Cats have joined the GBL, and I am pumped. Never liked the Northern League and how we were treated. So I never attended a single game. That is about to change in the 2008 season, I can promise you that.

I guess it is time to learn a little more baseball. I get a way better feeling about this than I ever did about what has been going on the last three years. I look forward to taking this GBL journey with all of you.

And we are looking forward to you, Mack. Can I call you Mack? Now we just need to see if this summer is a Canadian road trip summer or will it have to wait until 2009. Hm, 2009. If we get our team back, it'll be harder to travel. Better look into next year. :o

Mary,
My understanding is that the "southern" teams will make a trip or two up to the "northern" teams to play. I am looking forward to following the OC up and see all the games... what a summer! <<keeping fingers crossed for a return of the Dawgs!>>

Ah! I didn't think about that!

Hi Mary, if it tickles you, go right ahead and call me Mack. I can't wait to see what other teams join up. My hope is Saskatoon, Kamloops, Kelowna, Red Deer, and then two teams from the Pacific Northwest part of the US. I would love the US teams to be Spokane and Portland. (I see Spokane is an affiliate for the Rangers, crap)

Then again, I really don't know what baseball any of these places have, especially in the US. What do you think. The Commish says he wants 8 in the north, 8 in the south, and 8 in the middle. Pietsch? What team does that make you a fan of?

Welcome to the board Mack.

I look forward to heading up from San Diego for a game or two up your way.

Hi Mary, (snip) Pietsch? What team does that make you a fan of?

Sorry, I didn't see this the first time I read it. Pietsch was a Surf Dawgs (GBL) player I hosted for two summers. He then went to Joliet (NL) and then Lincoln (AA), so for a while I was a fan of many teams. :D

So you are a San Diego Surf Dawgs fan then, and live in San Diego. What size is San Diego? When I looked up all the cities in the GBL on wikipedia, some didn't have the metro (cma in canada) numbers. Some cities are unicities, and some have cities right smack against their borders.

Calgary has 1 million in their city and 1.2 in the CMA, while Edmonton has 750,000 in the city and 1.1 in the CMA. We really need to annex some stuff soon. They use our resources, roads, etc., but don't pay taxes to us. Big issue in politics here. Sorry, got off on one of my other interests, I have many, a little A D D. :infun:

July would be the best time for a visit. When does the season start and end in the GBL? Is it like the NL?

They haven't set the schedule yet, other than that it is 88 games, but it is normally mid-late June through August, early September

When does the 30 day window for expansion close? Whenever that is, I'd expect that would be when the schedule is released. My guess is that there is another two weeks left in that window for Saskatoon, Kamloops or anywhere else to join.

My understanding is that after the winter meetings for the independent minor leagues the schedule will be set. The GBL doesn't seem to hurry, we have gotten the schedules pretty late before (I think one time as late as March). I have no idea about the 30 day window for expansion closing date, but I would be surprised to see any more joining this season since they have announced the north/south divisions already...

Flyerfan,
I have a feeling the Winter and Summer schedule will be out within the next 5-7 days as they want to get everything done early thisyear as I have been told, we'll see.

I'm thinking that the teams the GBL has now are the teams they'll be running with.

Adding two more North teams would make things lopsided.

Maybe next year they can bring on two more Canadian teams, the San Diego Surf Dawgs (I'll never stop wishin'), and another South team.

I'm looking forward to this season, and we don't even have a darn team! LOL

YumaHeat, although I don't know, I still think they may wait until after the winter meetings in December, but only time will tell.
DawgsBooster2, I am pulling for he Dawgs for 2009 as well! I hear there are talks with Palm Spings, so maybe those 2 in the south & 2 more in the north will make it even for us.
