A player for the Fire will be filing an occasional blog for a local paper. His latest entry:

Mike Kinsella: Practice begins for Fire

EDITOR'S NOTE: Rochester native Mike Kinsella is playing for the Rochester Fire, a new franchise in the American Basketball Association that begins its season in November. Kinsella will periodically write about his experiences.

If you are reading my second entry today, then hopefully it is because you liked what I had to say in the first one and I left you yearning for more. And if you didn't like it, hopefully I can redeem myself this time around.

I have to say that it has been great to be back in Rochester. I must have forgotten what a friendly community this really was. As I was shopping at Hy-Vee North last Monday, numerous employees and other shoppers often offered a friendly smile or even a hello. Probably something we here take for granted and something that surely doesn't happen in all communities. These small things make me realize why Rochester is such a special place, and coming back and realizing it makes me appreciate it a lot more.

The first-ever Rochester Fire basketball practice was held on Wednesday, thus beginning my "Rochester Fire Experience" as I may refer to it.

Despite our official ABA basketballs being sent to the wrong address in Rochester and thus being returned to some small town we shall call Middle of Nowhere, Wisconsin, practice went pretty well. We were able to make do with RCTC's basketballs for a day.

It was really good to actually get on the floor and practice as a team with the guys. If we are going to be successful we need to come together fast and learn to play sound basketball as a team. I like the squad that has been assembled and think that we have a chance to be very good if we can all jointly buy into the system that Coach Hofer is putting in place.

I have to say that I have been quickly impressed with the play of our 7-foot-1 center Eric Bergstrom. He has shown ability to play strong down low and do the dirty work. I think he is going to bring intangibles to our team which are often overlooked by the casual fan. These intangibles however are things that every good team needs and they positively affect winning.

We have been getting a lot done in our practices, and I believe that by the time our first game rolls around on Nov. 9 at 7:15 at the Mayo Civic Center (my best attempt at a front office plug) we will be ready.

Hopefully we will continue to learn to play well together in Coach Hofer's offense and also become a sound defensive team. I think this is going to be a fun year and I really think that Rochester is going to enjoy watching this team play.

Be sure to check back next time as we get deeper into practice and see what might just be going through my head on that particular day.

This might be an interesting read as the season begins, to hear from the player's perspective. Nice publicity for the Fire...

Lesson to ABA teams, that is good publicity. Obviously Mike is articulate and giving a player's perspective of what is going on will help draw fans. Big points for Mike and the Fire.

Will till mike comes out and says

well i have not gotten paid in the last month and then when i thought i just got paid. The check bounced like a New York Knicks shot. We have moved from an arena to a middle school and our uniforms never arrived and we had to wear ones from the anderson champions that smelled like moth balls and sweat.
