Basketball team scores television deal
Jacksonville Business Journal - by Tony Quesada Staff Writer

JACKSONVILLE -- When the Jacksonville Jam takes the court Nov. 9 for its American Basketball Association season home opener at the University of North Florida Arena, the team will also be taking to the airwaves.

WJXE-LP, a recently licensed television station that plans to start broadcasting on Channel 15 in Jacksonville Nov. 1, has partnered with the Jam to broadcast locally all the team's 18 home games.

The Jam, entering its second season in the ABA, is believed to be the first minor league team in Jacksonville to land a television deal.

"It's a first," said Michael Bouda, manager of sports and entertainment at the Jacksonville Economic Development Commission. "I don't ever remember that happening."

Congrats to the Jam for securing a verifiable media agreement to televise games.

I had e-mailed Newman 2 years ago about getting games on low power tv...
its seems like an untapped market...These stations need to get local
programming to get recognized by cable...Needless to say, I never heard
a response.

Only concern here...will channel 15 make it on the air when planned?

my congrats to the Jam, I hope it works out. There is always the chance of canceled games, as was mentioned. But I would hope the visiting team would make every effort to get there.
But there is also the danger that more fans would want to stay home and watch instead of turning out.
When the Xplosion hosted Bellingham in our inaugural season, in the 2nd round of the playoffs, a local tv station televised the game live. Our average attendence had been over 1,600 for the last few games, but the television cut that in half. So I think that televising the Jam on the road would be better. As I said, I wish them well.

psbf -- The team and station both have to get established
first...Road games would be too expensive for a start-up
channel to produce...It is a step in the right direction...For now
(maybe not ALL the home games though...)

At this point...any exposure has to be good for the Jam and ABA

Also, if the team is gaining interest...Look for sponsors or the
city to try and help pay for away games to be produced.

that, but televising anything is expensive. Maybe they should have thought of broadcasting games over radio first. Much more affordable.

This is a great start. Congrats to the Jam.

I don't quite know whats gonna happen when they start cancelling games, or when the owner gets 50 people to a game and figures 100 more people might be watching on tv.

The Barracuda's don't cancel games.

Over Joe's dead body...

It will never happen while he remains in charge.

it already has, if the contract is signed.

You missed the reference.

Yes, the TV deal has been signed.

No, Felix has not stepped in to league affairs. This is only a Jam-related deal. Joe will never permit owners to have that much influence over the league, hence my 'dead body' reference.

Our fun, fast, family friendly broadcast of ABA action will not be seen tonight because the scheduled team just folded. In its place, we offer a special encore presentation of Ghandi II.

Your watching Channel 15. Why? We Don't Know?

And now we have a good idea of the source of 18 of the games on PlayOnADivisionOfTurnerSports (it is one word the way the ABA uses it, right?)...
