Article from the Reno Gazette Journal,,
Former Harlem Globetrotters guard Eathan O’Bryant said today he won’t be coaching the new Reno Sharpshooters’ in the American Basketball Association.
O’Bryant, a former Nevada Wolf Pack star, had been introduced as the Sharpshooters’ coach in August, although Greg Newman, the team’s president, said O’Bryant hadn’t signed a contract. The Sharpshooters are scheduled to open the season Nov. 3, but don’t have a home arena after negotiations with The Stadium fitness center collapsed 10 days ago.
Newman said the club could have an agreement on a new arena Tuesday. He said today that the team can’t wait any longer than that to have a place to play. O’Bryant said he didn’t want to wait to see if the venue deal would be made.
“It’s tough for me to put myself on hold, my family on hold and guys who were thinking about playing (for the Sharpshooters),” O’Bryant said.
“There’s only so much time you can just put things on hold and wait. I waited this thing out. Still there are things that are not done yet. I just thing it’s best for me to move on and continue to do what I’ve been doing (with the Nevada Basketball Academy) and not continue to wait around to see what’s going to happen.”
O’Bryant and former Nevada assistant coach Jason Glover operate the academy, which instructs youngsters. O’Bryant said he would still like to coach a pro team in the right situation.
Newman said he will find a replacement for O’Bryant after a venue deal is set.
“I wish him well,” Newman said. “I’m not really sure why he took this on if he wasn’t willing to go through with it.”
What a joke!
