The ABA has its own Power Ranking system to help determine the playoff seeding at the end of the season.
The only reason the ABA has a Power Ranking System is because they know that the league will never play a complete league schedule, with every team staying in the league for an entire season and playing a full 36 games.
Plus, there is no "official" league record-keeping of TEAM STATS in the ABA to justify an "Official" Power Ranking.
The ABA needs a way to "fix things" ... Especially for the playoffs.
Those ABA owners who are in good standing with the ABA CEO love the Power Rankings ...
Near the end of the season ... It's all about positioning for HOME GAMES during the playoffs!
I say, let it play out on the court ... Winning % ... 36 Games for everybody ... No team exits from the league during the season/playoffs.
That's a REAL sports league!
The ABA is led by an AMATEUR CEO!

I challenge anyone on this board to contact Brad or (tee hee) Joe to get a copy of the exact criteria/formula used to determine the Power Rankings.
The NCAA BCS criteria are readily available.
The poll info for college football/basketball are readily available.
Hell, the criteria for ranking HS football in NJ can be easily obtained.
But the ABA protects its 'criteria' as though it were Col. Sanders' secret recipe.
I will send a poster, pocket schedule and keychain (and anythng else I can find in my basement) from the NJ SkyCats to the first person to get valid, concrete information.
Granted, not a great prize, but isn't the real thrill in the hunt???

You asked for it........
Winning percentage multiplied by 100.
Add the number of games over .500
Add the number of games over .500 to the number of games they played.
If the division winner, add five.
Divide the result by 3
Multiply that by 1.6949
Gimmie my prize :D

...According to the bulla, bulla listed when the rankings are posted...Such
"factors" as margin of losses and opponents played are used....Somewhere
I seem to remember "qualitity of" and "support of" franchise being mentioned...
I think it's whatever Joe and Brad feel like ranking the teams at the time....

Support Joe blindly X never question his motives + have some media relations = power ranking no 1
Every time I use this formula it comes up VERMONT as number 1

Someone actually did an ASK THE CEO about how the power rankings were computed, or they posted an email from our hero where he basically said (I'm paraphrasing here)..........."I look at who is playing well, playing exciting fast paced family fun basketball and who I think is worthy"
or words to that effect. That isn't a joke either, someone posted that around here and it was from an ask the CEO or a response to an email.

That would be me... Happy to re-post from the old Yahoo board:

Well,
Joe has revealed the 'secret formula' for the ABA ratings.
As the emailer said... "Holy wow"
I wonder how many of the teams know this is the method? What a joke...
But, not unexpected from a man who announces "Santa Claus" as a new team owner.

Dan. Thanks for the email. Basically, the ABA has a panel of one - me - to determine the power rankings. I take into determination the won-lost record, the number of games, the closeness of losses, the difficulty of schedules, and how I feel on a given morning. Very scientific. Not hard to determine when a team is 12-0. Have a great weekend.

Mr. Newman-
I saw on a web board that someone had asked how the ABA does their rankings of teams. Are you going to post how the ranks are determined on ABAlive.com? Is it a committe of people? If so, how many, and who is on it? I see teams making jumps up and back - how do they move around?
The NCAA has coaches polls, writers polls, and the computer progams that they use - what does the ABA use?
Thanks

There was also this exchange with Joe (note the lack of an actual answer...).
It was a straightforward, respectful question about the core of the ABA's post-season tournament, and it was met with a smart-*ss answer from the kitchen king. I called him on it (it was on the Yahoo board), without an insulting comment attached and, well, see below...

Well, gotta love Joe. Don't actually answer the question, but be sure to rip the sender.
I suppose I'm not getting a holiday card from him this year.
The link for the BCS formula is below. Feel free to forward it to him. Maybe someone else will get an answer.

If you read it, you would see it was forwarded to the ABA discussion board by him. But seeing as how thorough you are with other, more important things (Al Howell, among others),I'm not surprised you missed it.
The new standards are working out great so far, aren't they? The league couldn't get past two weeks of the year without a team dropping out. Now, they are falling out all over the place. Good to know that the ABA once again has failed to provide a full, uninterrupted season of affordable, family-friendly entertainment.
But hey, at least the first hundred fans can get a free lapel pin. Heck, if those hundred fans went to an Xplosion, Frenzy or Wheels game, they would double the attendance.

Adam. How is it that you have an email addressed to Alex Lipkowski?
Is it because you know that I have no intention of communicating on any subject with you?
Have a good day.

Alex. Thanks for the email. How about sending me a copy of the college football rating system and let me see if it matches the one we use. You do have a copy, right? Thanks. Much appreciated.

As you know college football has a rating system and formula for its ranking system. What is the American Basketball Associations rating system and formula for the weekly rankings? Alex Clare, Iowa

After sending a secret spy through the streets of central Indiana, I have found the secret formula of the Power Rankings:
"1. Who's left?
2. Who can still afford to travel?
3. Who's butt do I have to kiss to keep that owner from bolting?"
That's about it folks.
