Own Your Own Basketball Team (and make it past the first game!)

Strong Island Sound Co-owner, Darren Cioffi, talks about surviving three years in the ABA.

By Matt Caputo

The ABA might be getting a bad rap. Ok, it’s true, that ABA teams fold faster than an express Laundromat and jump to other leagues like the CBA and, the yet-to-play, PBL at equally quick rates, but it hasn’t killed the league’s development. As teams come and go, some with nicknames God couldn’t like, a number of franchises have survived time’s test.

Considering SLAM readers have had their fair share of chuckles at the ABA’s expense, it’s only fit that we make an effort to support their league. With that in mind, SLAM asked Strong Island Sound owner and ABA C.F.O., Darren Cioffi, for some insight on staying afloat in minor league basketball.

“One of the things that we did wrong our first year was thinking “Ok, we’ve got a professional basketball team, people are just going to want come out and see us.” So we went ahead and just did our normal advertising and stuff. What we found was that it wasn’t until we actually got out into the community and went to the schools, Boys and Girls Clubs, the charity events and became a part of the community that we got people out to watch our games. We learned that lesson the hard way. There were some games where you could hear crickets in the gym during out first season, I’m won’t lie about that. There are a lot of people in basketball who want to come in and tell you how to do things the right way and people who say basketball is different than any other business, but it’s not. It is a business. If you treat it like a business and take the fun of the basketball game as secondary you’ll do fine.

My biggest piece of advice to someone wanting to become an owner is to get as much information about running a team before you even start. Anybody who wants to start their own team, be it professional or not, has to go and visit those people that have. You’d be surprised at how willing they are to sit down with you and tell you where the pitfalls are. We called up Frank Bolton, the owner of the Long Island Ducks (a popular Long Island, NY based minor league baseball team) and asked him if I could pick his brain. He actually spent the whole afternoon with us just showing us how the Ducks work, he showed us his budget and everything. Our players mingle with the court and what we get from the community is that’s what they like. They become fans of our guys because of that. Five years from now, I would like people to say that we are the Long Island Ducks of basketball. The Ducks have done a great job with everything that they’ve done; marketing, bringing people in, being involved in the community. We’re trying to emulate what they do. Even though we did that, there were still a lot of things we had to learn.

This year Turner Sports has signed on to Podcast the home games of fifteen teams in the ABA and the Sound are one of them. We’re now talking about expanding that to our road games through Turner as well. They’ve done a great job, providing us with all the equipment and everything. This is a real chance for us to connect with the community. Like at our home court, Suffolk Community College, they’ll benefit because we’re going to bring in interns who will get real life experience in broadcasting all of our home games. It’s a great improvement because during the first year we Podcasted all of our home games from one camera angle up in the stands and now we are going to have three cameras this year. It brings up the level of the whole league. Turner is a big name, and for them to want to work with the ABA is huge.

Being the owner of a professional basketball team is rewarding on a lot of different levels. It’s very cool to be able to say I’m the owner of a team and that these guys who play for me are all a part of the Strong Island Sound family. Anybody that has played organized sports knows that when you feel like you’re a part of something, it’s always a cool feeling. I mean, for me to be able to get a player into the chicken suite (costume of Sound mascot, Sheykan Bayke) because they know little kids love it, is a big victory for our team.”

It probably won't appear on ABAlive (see the opeing), but a good article.

One quibble, however: why use Turner Sports as the name of the company doing the broadcasts, instead of PlayON?

It is misleading, like saying the Yankees have hired you when, in fact, you have a job with their Single-A affiliate.

Measles and chickenpox have also survived the test of time...but does that make them a good thing?

TURNER SPORTS SIGNED ON TO DO PODCASTS?????? I thought it was "PlayOn"?

These ABA jokers are unbelievable, first it is..... "Play On, a division of Turner Sports", now this clown in the article is stating that it is "Turner Sports" with no mention of PlayOn.

GET OFF THE TURNER SPORTS THING GUYS.............Turner Sports has no idea your teams even exist. Enough with the play on words and "credibility by association" thing.

You're talking semantics here. If you want to boil everything down to give it a knock or two, then feel free to correct every minute detail. It is a positive article put out by a reputable publication. Darren was very open and honest in the interview and didn't attempt to sugar-coat anything. I can attest to everything he said because I was there seated right next to him since the start.

If the ABA was on prime time on ESPN, someone would come on here and bash it because it wasn't commercial-free. Whatever churns out will always have an opinion to make it appear negative. Maybe the league hasn't done itself many favors over the years, but once in a while a good thing can be spoken about without having the usual suspects reading into everything.

I said I thought it was a good article overall. I just felt the Turner Sports reference could have been a little clearer.

Still don't expect to see it on the league website, however - it isn't all roses and kisses to the league.

ABA R,W, &B - I was referring to the other 2 posts after your's. It just seems that everything gets turned into a joke on here. I have a good a sense of humor as the next guy, but when you are making an attempt to convey some good information, you expect some legitimate feedback pertaining to the subject.

Thats a fair comment and one of the things that have happened on here is exactly what you say. Right now there is simply nothing the ABA could do that would ensure good press on this board. Unless they jettison Joe. But to be fair there is no news that could be released that wouldn't be made a joke.

Problem is SI, it has been deserved. Joe can't have it both ways, some of his press releases' have been amateur to say the least, some of his responses' to valid questions have been abysmal.

You reap what you sow.

On Friday I called 6 ABA teams.......still NO answer ! at 3:22 pm eastern time.

So there is your answer why its a joke league And yes you are PART of that joke league.

When DArren stops getting a check, lets see how long strong island is around? What? Oh, there was NO check last week from the league for the CFO? Are you sure? Hmmmmmm

A1- I can't speak for other organizations, so I'm not sure who you called. If you try calling the team that I work for, there is a voice mail system where you can reach the extensions for each person in the front office. When someone is on that particular line, it will automatically send you to their voice mailbox.

Have teams in the ABA been less than acceptable in the way they have run their team? I'm sure the answer is obvious just due to the amount of teams that have began and not been there at the end of the season.

That is what needs to change. No one is denying that.

And why so much animosity towards Darren because he holds a position with the league? I feel that is a testiment to his abilities to. An owner being involved in a league's front office is quite the norm. Bud Selig was the commissioner of bb for many years while he also held the title ofBrewers owner.

You seem to be calling Darren out for doing two jobs. One with his team and one with the league. I am not quite sure what you do to cash your checks, but I would have to gather that it is not something in the corporate world. If you throw stones, you should be in a position to accept them, as well. The

Strong Island, the Sound play in Suffolk County so I'm guessing that your fans are out there. Without giving an exact location, I grew up in Nassau County. How has the reaction been there? Do you get any supporters?

The big push in our marketing and promotions have been in Suffolk County. Because are home games are played in Selden, it makes more sense to put most of your efforts and resources closer to there. We have done appearances in Nassau, as well, but concentrate out east more for the reason I stated.

Reaction? It has improved from year one to year two. We are anticipating an improved attendance number this year and the offseason plan to get out there in as many places as possible should make that a reality. Our summer camps and clinics were very successful, which we hope will translate into bigger crowds.

S.I.. It sounds like you will have improved crowds in the coming season, from what I've read. I look forward to following the Sound in the season ahead.
