1. teams that have come from other leagues to the ABA
2. teams that have left the ABA to go to other leagues

I'm not really finding a good single source. The more recent ones from the ABA are easier to find:

RGV to CBA
Pittsburgh to CBA
Minnesota to PBL
Rochestor to PBL
Maryland to PBL
Wilmington to PBL
Reading to PBL
Quad Cities to PBL
Rockford to PBL

....weren't there defections to the IBL?

Arkansas to the D-League

Well Fells spent some time figuring out that around 62 percent of games actually were played in 2006 and the SEC report indicates that 20 million + has been lost in this venture.

So I'm sure we can figure this out.

The other thing is how many teams played less than a season and folded, or in ABA parlance, were thrown out for not meeting the minimum requirements. (ie Calgary Drillers). How many teams were announced by the league and never played a single game (a'la Edmonton Cheetahs).

Indiana--> CBA (but not playing this season)

Bellingham--> IBL

I'm particularly interested in the teams that have come and gone to/from (not really folded), relative to the "Ask the CEO" release that just hit OSC today. Just trying to figure out how big of an impact these defections have had relative to the 100+ total teams that had one time existed in the league. Have any teams left other leagues to come to the ABA in the 7 year history of the new ABA? Thanks for pointing out Arkansas....I forgot about them.

Okay, let me see if I can help on this one.

Arkansas RimRockers went from 2005 ABA champion to D-League
Pittsburgh Xplosion, Indiana Alley Cats and San Jose (later Minot) Skyrockets moved to CBA after 2006 season.
NEPA Breakers moved to USBL after 2006 season.
Rio Grande Valley Silverados to CBA after 2006-07 season.
Rochester Razorsharks, Maryland Nighthawks, Reading Railers, Minnesota Ripknees, Wilmington Sea Dogs, Quad Cities Riverhawks and Rock River Fury to PBL after 2006-07 season.
Bellingham Slam to IBL after 2006-07 season.

That's what, fourteen teams to four leagues in three years? And if you don't count the PBL defections, you would have seven franchises in three seasons.

The Vancouver ABA team left and has joined the CBA as the Vancouver Dragons, they are trying to be an all Chinese team.

However this is a little weak as neither team has ever played a minute.

Vancouver wont play till 2010 which means they will find a new excuse in 2010 to not to play

The ABA has had 137 franchises in six years, only 25 of the 137 are expected to return and play the 07/08 season. Of those 25 franchises only 9 have completed two full seasons.
Of those 9 teams:
-Two have folded at some point in their history.
-One has moved or changed it’s name following each season.
-and three are rumored to be in grave danger.

Kids taught to shoot baskets, not bullets
Wednesday, August 15, 2007

You can find a lot of shooting in sports.

There are shots on tennis courts and shots on soccer fields. You have shots over the outfield wall in baseball and a quarterback might receive a shot from a blitzing linebacker.

Saturday, more than 50 youngsters worked on their shots on the basketball court at the Lakeshore Foundation. They also were urged to avoid taking the kind of shots that can put their futures in jeopardy.

The U.S. Department of Justice teamed with the Birmingham mayor's Division of Youth Services and the Birmingham Magicians semipro basketball team and law enforcement officers to host a basketball camp.

Not just any camp. While jump shots and layups were taught and taken, this camp also urged that shooting with guns be avoided.

Boys and girls picked up playing tips in the morning at the Project Safe Neighborhoods Basketball Camp. In the afternoon, they picked up tips for the game of life.

"We target youth to let them know to stay away from guns," said Jill Ellis, executive assistant to the U.S. Attorney. "That's why we say, `Shoot baskets, not bullets.' Stay away from guns."

Each child got a T-shirt as a reminder of that message. Representatives from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives also spoke to the campers.

Their message was that they must have a goal and they have to have a dream if they hope to achieve.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Alison Blackwell is the local coordinator of Project Safe Neighborhood, which is the firearm and anti-gang arm of the agency. She said she'd much rather see these campers on the basketball court than in criminal court.

"I've been prosecuting a long time and they get younger and younger," she said. "Some of these kids have never been in a facility like this. We're able to show them different options that are available."

Cedric Sparks, the executive director of the Division of Youth Services, said he hopes the camp whets the appetites of youngsters to let them know what they can become.

"And they can't become that if they fall to the ills of the streets," he said. "Being involved in camps like this teaches them to nurture their natural ability and learn that there are rules to the game as well. Not knowing the rules is as bad as not playing the game at all because you can still fall ill to the things that you're thinking are the right way to go but they're actually not."

Like settling an argument with a gun.

No doubt several of the 7- to 16-year-olds envision themselves as future stars of the hardwood. Few boys in fourth grade or higher don't include a professional sports career among their life goals.

Sparks isn't one to squelch such hopes.

"As long as they dream, as long as their dream is beyond what they see day to day," he said. "There are always limitless opportunities."

Unless you make the wrong choices. Then you may blow your shot. Solomon Crenshaw Jr.'s column on community sports appears on Wednesdays. Write him at screnshaw@bhamnews.com.

The logos of many of those former and never-were teams are a prominent feature of the Reno team's new web site. Only in the ABA.
And what is so "tough" about getting a web site up? I can help almost any business get one up in hours and for very little money.
